I stand 5′ 9″ and the sword I want to buy is a Hsu Jian. I’ll be using it for tai chi. The sword comes in 3 blade lengths 28″, 30″, and 32″. Which Size should I get.

  1. Generally the sword should be about thirty inches. It’s hard to say exactly which one is going to work the best for you. If possible try to find somewhere you can get your hands on one. Length is just one factor. You also want to check the flexibility of the steel as well as the balance of the sword. Find out if the sword has a full tang which means the steel of the blade runs through the whole handle. Not that you wlll probably be running into any real sword battles anytime soon but it is a sign of genuine craftsmanship.
I’m 6′ and the sword I use is thirty inches.
