  1. Right, so adoption of another persons traditions with the goal of converting them to your beliefs is not stealing.
So, you have no problems with Islam as the One, True Faith then, hmmm?
And plagerism isn’t stealing, since it’s just words…

  2. They didn’t steal it per say they just made it on the same day and took a lot of the symbols and rituals so that it would be easier for people to deal with. It was a political move by the early Christians to try to become more accepted.

  3. LOL, that is a good one!
I just want to say to all pagans that sorry if we stole something! ; )
I celebrate Christmas for Jesus Christ.

  4. The angels, shepherds, and wise men celebrated the birth of Christ. Feel free to join in!
Luk 2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Luk 2:9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
Luk 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
Luk 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Luk 2:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Luk 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Luk 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Luk 2:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
Luk 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
Luk 2:17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
Luk 2:18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

  5. actually you are wrong Christianity did not such thing, the pagan festival you may be referring to took place during the beginning or middle of December, not December 25. Also the solstice god celebration took place well after the birth of Christ. Science has determined with accuracy and star and planet alignment that Christ would of been conceived on or around December, being born on or around Sept 11-25. Your argument has no meaning.

  6. As Christian missionaries moved into new areas they merged their holiday with the traditional pagan elements of whatever midwinter celebration the culture had with the intention of making people forget that the celebration originally had another meaning. Celebrations of the time when the days started getting longer were practically universal in ancient times. The church knew that simply banning the traditional customs would get them nowhere, so they incorporated them into the Christian holiday.
That’s why there are so many people today who honestly believe that decorated trees, mistletoe, feasts, exchanges of gifts and so on are of Christian origin.

  7. Like the first response…’steal’ might have not been the best word for me to have used…BUT it was taken and twisted to their own views.
When Christians decided the were converting everyone they used the Pagan holidays into their own. Pretty sh*tty, but there ya have it!

  8. In a sense you are right. BUT…the pope put Christmas at the time of Winter Solstice around 4th century. This was to make it easier to convert the pagans to christianity. Back then it was all politics…the more people they had the stronger an economy, army, and so on and so forth. Since the rise of Christianity, paganism has lost its footing as being a major religion. With the St. Valentines Day Massacre, Inquisition, and Crusades….one wouldn’t exactly want everyone to know that they were pagan. Rest assured that nowadays we hold our sacred day. No Christian can keep us from celebrating it.

  9. First off, the Christians didn’t steal anything; the Roman Catholics under the Vatican did.
Secondly, allow me to set the record straight for you other pagans who think Christmas is your “idea”.(those of the northern European pagans).
Christmas had its origins in ancient Babylon under Semiramis whose son/husband (Nimrod) was killed by his uncle for the foul and ungodly acts he was committing. You pagans of Europe have nothing to do with the original practice of observing the winter solstice, so stop acting like you think Christmas is “your idea”; it isn’t.
The first, early Christians – the Jews at Jerusalem – had nothing to do with the Roman observance of Christmas as they thought it was useless and unscriptural.
Many of them died for refusing to take part in this dark festival.

  10. We did not steal anything. Jesus’ birth is just a fulfillment of of OT prophecy of the birth of the Messiah.
Christmas is celebrated because the Jews believe that the prophets were conceived and died on the same date. It is actually believed that Jesus was conceived on March 25th therefore His birth would be December 25th. This would match prophecy of the Messiah being conceived in the Passover season. It has clear Judeo/Christian origin. St. Augustin wrote on this connection as did other fathers. This can be found by those believing in Bible alone but extensive hermeneutical training is necessary to see the connection between prophecy and the NT testimony of Jesus’ birth.

  11. Simple. You rent the hall next to the Solstice celebration, put up a different sign and do the same thing they’re doing (except for the sex) with better food.

  12. they didn’t steal the date at all, society changed as they accepted the teachings of the church, same as today people are getting more materialistic and moving away from the true meaning of christmas they accept secularism. the story of the crib was not thought of until francis of assisi built one in the 13th. cent.

  13. Steal is definitely the wrong word. Because we Pagans still have our celebrations.
What is amusing is certain Christians who feel that anything Pagan must be evil, but still hang up mistletoe, holly, and decorate a tree. These are the people who wouldn’t allow their kids to go trick or treating, because somehow getting candy will open them to evil, but using our symbols at Christmas time doesn’t.
I like it that Christians adopted our celebrations. It is so nice to go out this time of year and see all of the Yule and Solstice symbols. Even if the people don’t know what they mean, I do, and I appreciate it.

  14. 1. They decided that Jesus was born on Dec 25th, certainly directly after the yule celebration in any year since that’s the solstice. If you can find a FACT that proves that Jesus was born on that day, not a claim, I’ll eat lamb (I shun the flesh of baby animals).
    2. They rounded up and fined, jailed, tortured, killed, or just harassed those who held celebrations other than their “high masses.” Those who celebrated Yule were jeered at as “stupid heathens” as a bare minimum.
    4. They destroyed the temples of the previous religions wherever they went and built their churches on the same spot claiming that this spot was somehow “Christian” or ordained by God now. They even claimed that Jesus had once walked in England. There’s even a stupid drunkard song about it.
    5. They made it taboo to talk about the old traditions. Thanks to them, the traditions seem stupid to us now instead of having cultural meaning. I mean, don’t morris dancers just seem like silly fun? But at one time, they had meaning. What it was is anyone’s guess anymore.
    6. They changed the words of the old carols so they now sounded Christian instead of having the original words. The originals words have been mostly forgotten now.
    7. They forced the priests to join up or be jailed, harassed, etc… so the people would follow.
Would you like me to go on?
Read the Canterbury Tales, don’t just go see a play. Read an Anthology of Literature, the really old stuff that nobody knows what it means anymore? Try to guess what it means. Think for a minute. You’ll see what I mean. It’s all there for anyone to see. Plus there is acutal scholarship on this. But I haven’t quoted it here. This isn’t a scholarly journal. Talk to a reference librarian that isn’t a churchgoer. You’ll find it.
Oh, and it’s not just Christianity or the Vatican that did this. Read up on the history of Buddhism in Asia. You’ll see the same thing in the argument between Buddhism and Hinduism. Anytime one religion has supplanted another the tactics are very similar and very evil.

  15. I like how people think that Jesus was born in December, when he couldn’t have. The shepherds were tending their flocks, yet they put their flocks away around mid-October. The Pope put Christmas around the Winter solstice because it would be more convenient and a way to divert people from the pagan feasts and celebrations (The Pope wrote a letter and that’s what it said.)
