Power plants on earth use the process of fission, the Sun primarily uses fusion of Hydrogen isotopes.

A nuclear power plant uses fission as the source of heat, it splits the atoms of uranium under controlled conditions, the heat from fission is used to boil water to drive steam driven generators. The sun uses fusion, the sticking together of atoms of hydrogen to form helium, in this process a tiny portion of the hydrogen atoms is converted into pure energy, E=MC2.

Power plants use nuclear fission, where heavy elements are split, and release energy. The sun uses nuclear fussion, primarily the proton-proton cycle. The energy released in both cases comes from the binding energy of the nucleus. Similar to the electrons, the nucleons are bound in the nucleus with a certain binding energy. When the nucleus is split or is fussed together some of this energy gets released, providing that the reaction takes the nucleus towards Ni-55.
