putting it simply, its the production house of MELATONIN which induces sleep.Light of higher radiation and intensity affects the feedback loop in negative sense and inhibits the production of melatonin.It ceases during daytime and catapults again during late evening to prepare us to bed.Thats why you cant sleep with the lights on and you need sunlight to fully wake up!
