How does a solitary wiccan become a high priestess?

I am a solitary wiccan and don’t wanna join a coven. But i do want to know if i can become a priestess ,and at the same time be reconized as such by other wiccans.

  1. You would need many years of experience.
But really, the role of high priestess is found almost exclusively in the hierarchy of a coven, because by Wicca everyone is a priestess or priest, the “High” part just indicates that they are something akin to a leader/elder-type.
    @ Alorer: Are you Wiccan?
Ha ha, sorry. I was just curious. Would you prefer I email you? 🙂

  2. Sorry but you can’t. A High Priestess is a title gained within a coven, it is a rank.
In most pagan religions the individual is a priest/ess on his/her own because most of these religions don’t require intermediates between the individual and the dieties. In addition the clergy that exists is mostly for ceremonial reasons (e.g. in a group of 12 you can’t have all of them casting the circle etc. at the same time).
Oh and another thing: just because one Trad or coven recognize one as a High Priestess, that doesn’t mean that her rank and title will hold much significance in other Trads and covens necessarily.
EDIT: At Silver Star Dancer: No, but I have studied some outer court material and still do when I find books etc. Also, I know plenty of Wiccans (Trad and Neo alike) and through many talks I have learnt a lot about this religion. You could have e-mailed me you know. 🙂
EDIT 2: Yes, because I answer quite a few questions here, and this one gets buried so I wouldn’t be able to respond to you.

  3. By stop being a solitary and joining a group and getting the required initiations.
Sorry, but as an HP part of your duties are to the people, which means you actually have to have people.

  4. I don’t think you can. Technically a HP goes through specific training given by a coven. It takes years to get to priestesshood. Furthermore to be a priestess you must have a coven to be a “head” of. Since your not interested in being in a coven it’s pointless to be a priestess.
Why is it you want to be recognized as HP? Do you think that it makes you a better wiccan in other people’s eyes? If that is your reasoning your not going about Wicca properly. It’s not about titles and recognition. It’s about being at one with your spiritual self.

  5. So your ego wants recognition that you are important but you don’t want to do the service to earn it. This is what the practice of typical Wiccan material (natural forces) based magic does to you. It inflates the ego. This is my objection to most forms of Wicca.
For a solitary to become a priestess you have to turn 3x clockwise in from of your altar and say, “I’m a priestess. I’m a priestess. I’m a priestess.”
Stop being so self centered. Leadership is recognized by your behavior, not your meaningless rank. You will be considered a priestess when you take on the role in a meaningful way and facilitate group rituals.

    • Addressed to Amy – It’s unfortunate that people are critical, when others are asking questions with naivety and innocence. That is what elders and peers are for, to educate. However, what has been induced, is something that you hold apparently ‘dear’ to you, which is ego. Your saracasm is entirely uncalled for and unprecedented. It is not Wicca that induces are creates ‘ego’, it is that of being a human and the lessons involved. Comments of this nature are rude and arrogant, just because you know the answer, you feel that you make someone else feel small, because they are simply asking a question. Is that not how we learn? by asking questions? Perhaps this person is an introvert and would like to feel feminine and would like to attune to something or someone that she identifies with and is searching on her path to explore and know who she is. There are ways of answering questions, and unfortunately, the way that you have answered is very degrading.

      • I agree with you Eyasha, and I like how you put her in her place. No one needs to be degraded for asking a question or made feel small. Thank you for writing your post. More people need to stand up to people like her.

  6. typically a high priestess is elected to be the leader of a coven, to become a solitary priestess doesnt necessarily have rules..what i mean is, through experience and time you will know if you are ready to be a priestess, if you are unsure, hesitant, or doubtfull you are not ready

  7. The term High Priestess denotes someone who has gone through training and has worked to lead a group.
If you were to train on your own and started your own group, you could call yourself a High Priestess I suppose, but many British Traditional Witches won’t recognize you as a “genuine” High Priestess. The important thing is not what others think, it’s what YOU think that is important. If you can help people find their Faith and their Truth, then you’re doing your job. It’s not an easy one by any means but worthwhile.

These two books are great for helping you understand how to create your group and the rituals for it.
    Blessings on your journey.

  8. You clearly don’t understand what “high priestess” means. It’s a role that makes no sense for a solitary Wiccan.
BTW, the title ONLY makes sense within a coven or Tradition. Wiccans outside of your coven or Tradition (if you had one) would be under no requirement to treat you any differently because your coven bestowed the position of high priestess upon you.
People who want to be high priestesses for the “recognition” make lousy high priestesses, because it becomes an ego issue.

  9. I wouldn’t be so rough on the answer. Yes priestesshood needs a coven to have actual significance. BUT, like me, there is nothing wrong and it’s not impossible to be a solitary wiccan and want to be a high priestess so you can have your own coven. I, for example don’t wanna join an existing coven, but I have have my own. So what i reccommend is a lot of studying, research and dedication, when you think honestly that you have reached the level of knowledge and expierence to be a HP, look for people that would like to join you in a coven, then make your coven, when all that is ready check with your integrants if you are ok to be the HP, if they think so, make yourself a ritual where your coven is with you announcing you as the new HP.
    bright blessings

  10. Aisha Shamise you are right.
you can become a HP w/o being in a coven. You can then start your own if you would like, or go around and help others, teach, etc. It is possible as long as you take your time and study the history and such about Wicca.

  11. a high preiestess is a title earned for people who want to lead others and are able to lead a group along the right path. I am a solitary Witch and I would like to earn the right to call myself a High Priestess because I want to begin my own coven so that I may help others like the Craft has hellped me. You can become a HP through hard work and study. I just enrolled myself in a Wiccan college so that I can study and learn what it means to be a hp. Not everyone is suited to be a HP. But the title is not as important as living the way a woccan should. it doesnt matter how many degrees you earn as long as you live like a true wiccan that it is all that matters.

  12. I was a soliatary for many years. (about 5) Now I am starting my own coven. Currently a practice with my fiance, (who will be my high priestess), and two friends who are my students.

  13. I am a solitary witch. In some books i have read the authors say when u r a solitary u can pretty much do what u want because no one is there to tell u that u can’t. If u want to call yourself a HP go ahead. I read a book about a year and a half ago, can’t remember which one, it stated if u dedicate yourself to one goddess u can b considered a HP. Im currently rereadin a few books if i come across that book i will post it. Regardless of whether or not u r in a coven, are a new practitioner or Ur title, the Goddess knows what’s in Ur heart. There are many books out there for solitary witches. I know some believe Ur not really a witch or wiccan unless Ur in a coven but there are others that believe that its not true. There are many great solitary practitioners! I have most of Scott Cunninghams books. Be true to yourself. Don’t ever let anyone tell you Ur path is wrong. Blessed Be!

  14. Good evening, you can ordain yourself as a hp under a full moon with the full ritual,Just because you are a solitary practitioner does not mean you cannot and are not allowed to ordain yourself, you need to have many year’s of experience’s behind you,to be fair on yourself. The Wiccan religion is about nature and the freedom to do want you want in perfect love and trust, follow the old way’s of the faith and being with one with nature, you are what you are inside your god/ess know it and you know it,so now start to enjoy it..! Blessed Be .

  15. I’m a solitary wiccan. But i’ve recently joined up with 2 more wiccans I’ve stumbled across. Is there some way that i can maybe become a HP seem i do admit to knowing the most about wicca, even though we’re only a group of 3? If we can’t, does anyone know about where i can contact some more wiccans in Wodonga?
    Blessed be

  16. Some of the people here on this board were a bit harsh. I think if you want the title of a High Priestess you can contact another HP and she can help you do the ceremony for elevation. As a solitary you don’t need to be anything and that is the beauty of a solitary life as a witch but some like to have a rank and that is okay too. As a witch it is not our job to judge another and the rule is to harm none . There are some Wiccans that believe that each rank has to be held for a year and a day starting with first degree, then second , and lastly third which is the high priestess rank. I believe that some witches learn faster than others and to hold you back because of time is not fair. Also I must say here that I have met a lot of woman who said they were high priestesses and didn’t know what the hell they were doing so knowledge is so very important. Another thing you might do is to study with a coven and ask not to be a member. Covens are tricky things too as some may do things that go against your personal beliefs so it is important to find one that you can work with if you decide to go that route. I am a solitary because I have yet to find a coven that felt comfortable to me. I don’t need the title of HP but that is because I don’t want to start a coven. There are a lot of books out there to study all the things you need to know but to be an HP you need to have another HP to help you get there. Although I have heard of a ritual that can be done by solitaries for elevation but can’t remember what book it was in. I just go to the Goddess and tell her what I need and talk about it with her and wait to hear what she has to say about it. That is my way of doing things.Hope this helps.

  17. One could want to be a high priestess because it makes one feel more connected, but here the question is being asked by solitary wiccan. In effect, she has ceased to be solitary ans is asking her peers for information and approval. That suggests that she is aware that being a high priestess requires that one is acknowledged as such. The process of acknowledgement means that one has opened oneself up to criticism, learning, humility etc and that one must scrutinize what one truly knows and can offer in service in the light of the understanding and wisdom that others bring. We are connected, after all.. Unless we can compare our knowledge to that of others and be continuously open to learning and serving, it means nothing to have a title. One can surely act as a solitary, but be in contact with others to share and grow. I imagine the issue is with being affiliated and losing freedom. That is the cost, though. The best thing is to constantly learn and share with others in some way. That way it is possible to remain a solitary in practice, but have a mirror for growth and understanding. Confidence and wisdom means there is no need for a title. It is just an added bonus. Our own connection with truth is really our own business.

    • to be honest no one has any right to disapprove of a solitary witches decision to pursue a path of higher education. This being the path to becoming a high priestess. As a high priestess myself I concur with this person. As a solitary witch. I support any witch out there pagan wiccan or heathens alike. Be aware however that you don’t need a license to be a priestess or a high priestess. Just confirmation from your deity. I care not whether anyone else agrees with me. So Merry meet and merry part. Blessed Be.

  18. im not wiccan but i am part of the pagan community and im looking to become a high priestess but licensing is the issue since i live in NY… what could i do
