How do many saints in Hinduism and Buddhism go for long periods of a time without food or drinks?

I know the question sounds stupid, but I was reading an article about a man from India who hasn’t eaten or drank anything in 70 years (if you want to read the story click the link–it’ll probably explain more facts). I myself am a Hindu, and many people in India are super-religious. I was talking to my family about the story, and they said that it’s possibly true, but don’t know whether to believe it or not.
So, what I’m trying to ask is, how do many saints in Hinduism and Buddhism go for long periods of a time without food or drinks? I know they meditate and do Kundalini yoga.
Is this question really debating more on religion or science?

  2. Yes this might be true. However, all spiritual seekers do attain such powers on sufficient sadhana no matter the religion. Eg: Therese Neumann (mentioned in the Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahamsa Yogananda)

We cannot dismiss something merely because scientists cannot explain it. In fact, their job is to find explanations for the working of things in the universe, not to deny that something beyond their understanding cannot happen.
We use only 10-15% of our brain. Kundalini yoga and meditation enables us to use a larger portion and hence we can do much more than what we already can.
