Not only Theravadans, but also there are objective historians (no source) that say mahayana texts have adhamma added to the dhamma. Some scholars also say Mahayana have contradictory teachings within Mahayana texts themselves.
How do Mahayanans know they’re following only original teachings with no apocryphal ideas mixed in?

  1. The problem with organized religion is that anytime you have sub divisions, the original texts or philosophies can be corrupted.
Thankfully, Buddhism isn’t a deity based religion or philosophy. So it does indeed have room to grow based on changing cultures and scientific discovery.

  3. Who knows the original teaching? Use your brain to figure it out. Use your own intelligence to understand it and use your wisdom to apply it.
As long as it is not superstitious story, it should be ok.

  4. Original teaching :
All beings are equal, treat all beings with kind loving compassion.
All phenomena are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, an image,
    like a drop of dew, and like a flash of ligtning;
one should observe these like the enlightened one.
PS: If one can let go of his own cognition of his ego self, then one will understand that all are equal and thus one will know the sufferings and pain of other beings and thus arise with eternal loving kindness and compassion towards all beings.

  7. Is Y!A working for me again?
Oh, it is! Yay~ Ok, to answer the question, Buddhism is a growing philosophy with a simple and clear message of good. There’s no need in my opinion to look for contradictory messages or poke holes. It’s like trying to apply the laws of gravity to something like breathing air. You can do it, but what good does it do? In the end you’re still breathing same as ever. XD

  9. how does anyone know for themselves. how do scholars know? they’re just extrapolating and making conjectures, dwelling on the mundane.
We each have to read it for ourselves.
For me, I trust in the mahayana because of my teacher. His demonstration of understanding, wisdom, and definite practice has shown me great understanding without contradiction. Though he claims nothing of any attainment, we see from his words, knowledge, and wisdom to be proof of his attainment. And he abides in the mahayana and thusly, it’s obviously working. He’s lectured for 20 years without preparation, without reference, without looking anything up… lecturing several times a day, and having always been consistent and wise. He had to have had some great attainment from his practice to do that. Never seen anything like it in my lifetime.
In addition, so I have studied in the mahayana. And I interpret it based on the mahayana, not the sentence itself, not the sutra itself, but how it fits with all of buddhism. I have not found any contradictions so far and I’ve been in this for a long time. Perhaps the mahayana in china is troublesome because of the corruption of commercialization and government.
I read, observe, and judge it for myself. And I’ve entrusted my teacher along with thousands of his disciples. I because of this consistency and demonstrate of great resolve, I find myself terribly lucky to have such an unflawed source. Even when I look with an investigative eye to always look out for flaws/contradictions. Through my teacher and the sutra translations certified by him and the BTTS, I have found none.
And the progress of my own practice has already proven to me, time and time again, that the Mahayana is proclaiming the truth. Far be it for me to stick with something that yielded no results. I’m not that crazy.
So that takes me to another thing. Your progress is your proof and it’s not for others to say otherwise.
