How do I get over self-consciousness and low self-esteem?

I am very self-conscious about myself, and I have very low self-esteem. Ever since I was young, I’ve been excluded, and it cause me to think very poorly of myself, mostly in my appearance. Is there any way for me to feel better about myself? I have a great boyfriend, and he tells me that I’m amazing, but I still feel badly about myself.

  1. My advice would be to work on yourself, set goals and succeed; over time you will recognize that you are competent and have no reason to think that you have some reason to believe you are in any way deficient (my impression of an aspect of shyness). Also, acting as if you are confident can bring about a change in how you view yourself. You will probably not get it right at the beginning, only practice can bring about the results you want.

You wouldn’t worry so much about what people think of you if you realized how seldom they did.

Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.
Self-pity is easily the most destructive of the nonpharmaceutical narcotics; it is addictive, gives momentary pleasure and separates the victim from reality.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved, and always will solve, the problems of the human race.

  2. I’m like that but the more I force myself to open up, the more comfortable I am with other people. There will always be people that will hurt you or embarrass you or make you feel low about yourself. Accepting that staying away from people that make you feel down on yourself is the best way to break free of that negativity.

  3. Have you considered joining yoga or tai chi? (Even martial arts?) I learned so much about how to become strong from within and accept myself and believe in myself from having awesome teachers. If you take on a discipline, or even belly dancing, something that will boost your self confidence, the positive actions will help reinforce a new more positve outlook. Doing something good for yourself and making a habit of it will help you to feel empowered. You can also read up on women’s empowerment.
