  1. unconscious means you are not awake. Your subconscious mind is the part of your brain that you store your memories and emotions in.

  2. Freud divided mind into the conscious mind or Ego and two parts of the Unconscious: the Id or instincts and the Superego. He used the idea of the unconscious in order to explain certain kinds of neurotic behavior. The term subconscious was soon eliminated due to its ambiguity.
In this theory, the unconscious refers to that part of mental functioning of which subjects make themselves unaware.
The unconscious is the storehouse of instinctual desires, needs, and psychic actions.
Subconscious is defined as “operating or existing outside of consciousness”. It may also be used to describe the preconscious, information contained in the mind, which although not presently in the conscious, may be recalled by “directing attention to them”, such as memories not being recalled at present, but still available to be recalled at will.
You could describe the conscious as the top layer of thought of which we are fully aware, the subconscious as the middle layer, that comes into play without our direct knowledge, where information is stored but must be ‘retrieved’, and the unconscious as the bottom layer where information is stored of which we are unaware.
