Have you or anyone you know experienced 'spiritual awakening' as a result of doing yoga?

Some Christians believe that yoga is very dangerous and may awaken evil spirits. Yoga is a form of exercise that stretches the body and calms the mind. I just want to know if what these people believe holds true. Has anyone experienced any sort of contact with ‘spirits’ or know of anyone who has, or has read of real accounts of this occurring?

These Christians are simply intolerant and want to discourage anything associated with other religions. You can do yoga if you find it beneficial. Here is some further explanation of yoga which I gave for a similar question:
The system of yoga is a complete system that includes both physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), as well as a way of living and systems of meditation. The meditation aspect is actually the main and most important aspect, and the goal of the greater system of yoga is to unite one’s consciousness with the infinite, unlimited reality that underlies all existence (which some refer to as god). The physical postures of yoga are intended as a preparation to meditation on this ultimate reality, and it helps to calm the mind and breath for this meditation.
However, even if you do not approve of the meditation and Hindu philosophical aspects, you can still do the physical yoga, as its main purpose is to calm the mind and keep the body supple. So while it is true that yoga is part of Hinduism and has a mainly religious/spiritual goal, the physical side of it can nevertheless be practiced by anyone. You can get the benefits from the physical aspect alone, although its full benefit will be achieved when used for the greater purpose of meditation upon the ultimate reality.


You might hear this kind of thing from preachers since they feel threatened by anything that actually improves a person’s life.
A good Yoga teacher is about the best friend a person can have. They will show you how to make some real spiritual progress. There are many different kinds of meditation practices. Some are very religiously mixed, some not so much, and particularly in the west new forms of non religious meditation have become very popular during the last 30 years.
“Enlightenment” (whatever that means depending on who you ask) is one of the goals of most meditation practices.
If you get into the chakras and all of that sort of thing there are many that believe certain attitudes, drugs and practices affect the body’s “barriers” or membranes which can be damaged or “opened up” and thereby expose a person to “spiritual entities” according to some practitioners.
I meditate in order to relax and gain perspective but that’s about it.


Yoga is not evil. It has nothing to do with anything even associated with evil. Yoga is a natural way to let your body and mind heal. It is good for the heart, blood, and
the body as a whole. You people really need to learn more about yoga before basing an opinion about it.
And yes you can have a spiritual awakening it just may no be a religious awakening but an awakening of how you are treating your body. You may find out that your body doesn’t need additives and other harmful things and that you may even change the way you eat.
It can also help you stop smoking.
