“Do not eat the creatures of the sea that have no fins or scales, for they are unclean” Lev 11:10, I Cor 8:8 – 13, Deu 14:10
Just a simple question from a Pagan Shaman
I forgot to add the word most. Why do most eat shelfish?
This brings up another part to the same grouping of animals. Why won’t most Christians eat insects?
“Of these you may eat; the locust after its kind, the bald locust after its kind, the beetle after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.” Lev 11:22
God’s perfect right? So any answers saying that he changed his mind/jesus cotradicted this and that would say that good is imperfect to me. I expect an answer not gut reaction to the fact that I am Pagan.

Actually, I don’t…..I refrain from eating the unclean things listed there. And I am a Christian. I also keep the 7th day as Sabbath.

Well, the first Christians who were Jewish actually did keep those laws but as they wanted to convert the pagan European gentiles they found it hard to convince them of following those laws so it was dropped.

Because the bible is just a story book; written by men who are after the power to control others with their threats of a vengeful god.

Why don’t you read the Christian Greek Scriptures, or New Testament, which applies to Christians and leave the Mosaic Law out of the Hebrew Scriptures, or Old Testament, to the Jews who still observe them. Christians are not under the Mosaic Law, it was never for the Gentiles.

I suppose Jewish people still are kosher, but not Christians.
I guess, since Americans used to allow slavery, even though we now abhor it, we are guilty.
        Is that your point!

According to Levitical law, eating shellfish is forbidden (possibly because they didn’t know who had allergies and who didn’t). By trusting in Christ for salvation, Christians are freed from the Law of Moses. By the way, 1 Cor 8:8 – 13 has nothing to do with shellfish; it’s a warning that you should not cause your Christian brothers and sisters to sin.

        It’s pick & choose christianity.
They SAY that Jesus “overturned” those rules, even though Jesus in the bible specifically SAID that he didn’t. But a guy named “Paul” later took it upon himself to overrule Jesus.
anyway, they’ll say that Jesus overturned the Old Testament, but then fight for all of these 10 commandment displays (which come from the old testament). If Jesus overturned the OT, then the 10 commandments no longer apply and they’re being hypocrits

This reminds me of the Roman consul in the original “Spartacus.” While he was being washed by a young male slave, he launched into a not-so-cryptic discourse about how some men like oysters while others like snails. He, of course, liked both. Perhaps Christians are still figuring out what they like. 😉

I believe that this rule about the shellfish was in regards to the Jewish culture. God considered shellfish to be unclean. To the new Christians of the New Testament, Jesus told Peter, do not call what I have made unclean. Which meant that all food in the New Testament time period was considered clean in the eyes of God and we are allowed to eat it. There is something you need to understand that medically speaking, eating shellfish is not a good thing for anyone. The lasting effects of eating shellfish on a regular basis can cause some serious harms to the human body. It can increase fat as well as gout in the joints (the build of uric acid) – shellfish does not break down that easily in the digestive system. I personally do not eat shellfish for those reasons. There are other valid reasonings for not eating these critters, check out the medical expertise on this food.

Good question my Pagan buddy. I bet they simply do not know since that book is so big. Maybe their hunger gets the best of them. They do not make sense always changing the rules. I say if your gonna be a Christian then fallow the rules if not then don’t be a Christian, none of this half way stuff. Oh wow, I hope they don’t go crazy, but I got some shrimp in my freezer, YUM!

I agree with rukidding…..Truly being “christian” now days is like a social statement and not necessarily anything to do with the Bible, but more of a reason to get dressed up on Sundays and judge other people. (It also says that the TRUE sabbath is Saturday, but again, not many people paying that any attention….) Oh and it also says that you should have no other Gods or Idols yet Catholics go to a mere man for absolution????? How in the heck is that possible??? A lot of hypocrites if you ask me.

In your question you quoted a verse that answers it
“8 But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do. 9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, won’t he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall. ” 1 cor 8:8 -13
this clearly says we can eat anything we like so long as it doesn’t encourage someone else to do something they believe is wrong.
The old laws in the old testament were specifically for the Jewish people, there were a nation with out a government to give them stability so God set up laws for them some of the stranger laws were for sanitation and health purposes others were probably just to keep them different, special as God’s people.

Many of the dietary prohibitions were uttered over three
thousand years ago, before sea food could be kept fresh
for many days frozen or refrigerated. We. live in the XXI
century, take advantage of the modern technology

These dietery retrictions were given in the first testiment. It was a part of the first covenent with God and Man. christians have since made a new Covenent, Jesus said to forget all of the old silly rituals and do the two things that God really wants “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” (Mark 12:30,33). So the rules like dietery restrictions do not apply to Christians, since we believe what Jesus said in the bible.
Jewish people, whose religion is the foundation of Christianity, follow something called Kosher (dietery restrictions that are derived from the first covenent in the bible. Because they do not believe Jesus was the Messiah, they do not honour a second Convenent, therefore follow the first (including dietery restrictions–but that is only the really orthodox Jewish, some don’t even follow kosher). Their Torah is the Christian’s Old Testiment.

Laurie has it nailed. The Bible has been used for centuries to enslave the weak of mind. Powerful men (and women) will take advantage of any avenue possible to exert control over the less-educated, less-powerful and less-moneyed. When will the masses understand the ENORMOUS difference between religion and spirituality? I hope it’s soon, for all our sakes.

Not all Christians do. I don’t eat any of the unclean animals listed.
The only reason someone would chose to not follow the “health” ordinances laid out is because they have decided to pick and chose what they want to believe. This is told about in the Bible also. It refers to the fact that they won’t pay the preacher unless he tells them what they want to hear.
        2 Timothy 4
        1. I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
        2. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
        3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but AFTER THEIR OWN LUSTS SHALL THEY HEAP TO THEMSELVES TEACHERS, HAVING ITCHING EARS;
        4. And THEY SHALL TURN AWAY THEIR EARS FROM THE TRUTH.

Read the new testament Acts of the Apostles chapter 11 verses 5 through 9. This generally is speaking about a vision given to St. Peter about unclean things. He was predjudiced against non-jewish christians. However, it also shows that under the dispensation of Christ a fulfillment of the law in him releases us from such dietary restrictions.

That is not what I Cor. 8:8-13 says. And Lev. and Deu. are in the Old Testimate. God changed this law in the new testimate, allowing different animals that were forbidden by the old laws to now be eaten.
        Read Acts 10:9-16.

        I Timothy 4:3-5
3They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
        Acts 10:9-16
9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
14″Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”
15The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
16This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.
