The Buddha was born in Lumbini, which is located in foothills of the Himalayas in modern Nepal. (The countries of India and Nepal did not exist 2,500 years ago.)
Some of the key figures in the spread of Buddhism to the West are/were:
        Shunryu Suzuki Roshi (Japanese Zen)
        D.T. Suzuki (Japanese Zen)
Zen Master Seung Sahn (Korean Zen)
        Thich Nhat Hanh (Vietnamese Zen)
        Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (Tibetan Buddhism)
        The Dalai Lama (Tibetan Buddhism)
        Sogyal Rinpoche (Tibetan Buddhism)
        Jack Kornfield (Vipassana)
        Joseph Goldstein (Vipassana)
        S.N. Goenka (Vipassana)
There are many others, of course, but these are a few of the key figures.
