because most people have either been indoctrinated by their religion (above all Catholicism) or have seen to many horror movies lieke The Omen.

Ignorance.
I am a Christian and I believe in that those abilities are no more or less demonic than the sense of taste. If we are born with these abilities, or we develop them (such as running) then they are truly gifts from God.

Ed, not all peple do. Those that form an opinion so quick are usually in secure, uneducated. Quite often physics are called into a police investigation. So they cant be that bad.

It's ironic that 'abilities' like that get such bad press yet TV shows like Ghost Whisperer rate so well...

because any thing out of the ordinary scares religious people

They don't. We often associate those "abilities" with utter cluelessness and insensitivity to one's surroundings.
"Telepathy" is the result of watching too much television, and being unable to distinguish reality from fiction, and too lazy to live a real life.

Well, we don't always. In fact, in my religion, we see these abilities as holy ways to find the deity(ies).
ps. Everybody is psychic. You just need to try. It's like running a marathon. You can't do it if you don't jog everyday. But, if you concertedly work hard, you can eventually run a marathon... likely anyway.

Plain and simple.
People are afraid of that which they do not understand. But there are those of us who don't judge this way.

People tend to fear what they don't understand. If they can't explain it, they think it is bad. As Yoda said, "Misunderstanding leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering."
