When you are unconscious it's a short period of time, seconds to minutes. A coma is more severe and can last months. Someone may never come out of a coma.

Coma is when your eyes are shut for days, weeks, months, years. Loss of consciousness is when you are knocked out. When a person has a operation we lose conciousness. There is also another state of coma, loss of conciousness and that is comatose. That is when a person opens his eyes from being in a coma but still is not aware of his surroundings. With this kind of loss of conciousness a person is fed interveiniously. This happens with a serious head injury. They go thru wake and sleep modes but are completely unaware. They can not sit up, hold up their heads. They are completely limp. I know this because this happened to my son and lived like that for eight years. He is now in heaven.
