I think this is something that is often confused. A soul is the animating life force that dies when the body dies. The spirit is what lives forever.

The soul is what returns to God.

The KJV puts it this way in Gen 2:7
7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
It say's Man is a soul .

The word “soul” can refer to both the immaterial and material aspects of humanity. Unlike human beings having a spirit, human beings are souls. In its most basic sense, the word “soul” means “life.” However, beyond this essential meaning, the Bible speaks of the soul in many contexts. One of these is humanity’s eagerness to sin (Luke 12:26). Humanity is naturally evil, and our souls are tainted as a result. The life principle of the soul is removed at the time of physical death (Genesis 35:18; Jeremiah 15:2). The soul, as with the spirit, is the center of many spiritual and emotional experiences (Job 30:25; Psalm 43:5; Jeremiah 13:17). Whenever the word “soul” is used, it can refer to the whole person, whether alive or in the afterlife.
The soul and the spirit are connected, but separable (Hebrews 4:12). The soul is the essence of humanity’s being; it is who we are.

There's no such thing as a soul. It's something that was made up as an answer to the ignorance of people in ancient times who thought that there was something more to living things on earth than just the physical.
It's never been proved that there is and is unlikely to be proved. What you see is what you get when it comes to life on earth. No spirit, no soul. Invention of man/men.

Only humans have a soul, because humans are the only ones God breathed life into.
(Gen. 2:7) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
This breath of life is the Spirit of God. No other creature was given this. Therefore only humans can have a soul. So, the Bible says the soul is the Spirit of God.
The Bible does not say anywhere that animals have a soul. I'm sorry, I know at times it may seem that they understand, and are almost human. But, Fido wont be in heaven. At least, not the spiritual heaven. When Christ reestablishes His kingdom heaven on earth, you will see animals. The lamb will lie with the wolf. It will be just as it was in Eden, before the fall of man.

You are correct. And there are many good answers here. What makes some scriptures on this subject hard to understand is the fact that so many of these parts are hard to separate even in discussions. For example: The "mind" is not the "brain" and yet they are intimately connected. Witness head injuries, or some stroke victims. And how does one separate emotion from the powerful effect it has on the body?
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Pro 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Such complexity! What a mind our God has!

I learned the the soul is our mind, will and emotions. Our soul has to conform to God's will. We have to renew our minds by reading his word (the Bible) daily. By doing this, we wash away the old self (will and emotions) and line ourselves up to the accordance of God.

Rom 12:1-2
