The topic of enlightenment fascinates me, but im agnostic.. so im leaning more towards the intellectual side rather than the spiritual side. Any suggested reads would be appreciated.

My suggests would be;
Handbook To Higher Consciousness by Ken Keyes, Jr.
Limitless Mind by Russell Targ
Miracles of Mind by Russell Targ and Jane Katra Ph.D.
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Check them out and prepare to go one step beyond what you know now. The wisest mind has something yet to learn.

Enlightenment is not something that is gained by reading books. Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed... all reached the stage of enlightenment by traveling the path of spirituality... not religion! By fathoming the depth of wisdom contained in Sacred Bhagavad Gita of Hinduism... any human being can reach the stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana).
Bhagavad Gita... the foremost of all sacred scriptures available on Mother Earth is the only document following which one gains enlightenment on Mother Earth. Bhagavad Gita contains complete wisdom essential for reaching the stage of enlightenment. The knower of Bhagavad Gita finally becomes the knower of all... gains omniscience forever!
The contents of sacred Bhagavad Gita can never be understood literally... one needs reading in between the lines! The moment gist of all 700 shlokas (verses) contained in Bhagavad Gita become clear... one reaches the stage of enlightenment and finally salvation. Enlightenment is not that easily gained.
In the last about 150 years' only two persons world over (amongst 6500 million people) gained enlightenment... sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana! On the path of enlightenment Hinduism has the best to offer. The Sacred Bhagavad Gita, various Upanishads, the Sacred Ramayana and Mahabharata... all belong to Hinduism.
Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed... all gained their wisdom from Nalanda and Taxila universities of yore! The gist of Bhagavad Gita is available for mere $.40 (Rs 20/=) at most railway stations in India or directly from Gita press, Gorakhpur, India. This is a subsidized publication with transliteration in English.
For reaching the stage of enlightenment... establishing absolute control over five senses and mind is necessitated. Practicing absolute celibacy for a minimum period of 12 years in continuation is a must. In absence of practice of celibacy... full awakening of the Kundalini is not possible.
Unless Kundalini awakens fully... the Shahastra Pushpa (thousand petalled Lotus) within our brain would not open fully. Full awakening of the Shahastra Pushpa announces reaching the stage of enlightenment by human beings. More on Enlightenment- http://www.godrealized.com/enlightenment.html
