Pagans: What religion is responsible for you being a Pagan?

Occassionally we see people claim Pagans are Pagans as a reaction to Christianity.
What religion, if any, is responsible for you being a Pagan?
For example, I am a Wiccan because of Wicca.
[Happy Campfire Friday even though saying it unleashes the copycats.]

I'm a Deist who was Roman Catholic.

I didn't even have a religion for about a year before I declared myself a Pagan, so I can't honestly claim that any religion was involved in a negative way. I just like Paganism.

Haha.. =D
I'm an atheist, not a Pagan, but this made me laugh! ๐Ÿ˜‰
I have two Wiccan friends and one Pagan one.
And I can say with complete certainty that all three of them are that way because of THEIR respective religions! Not as a stupid rebellion kind of thing, or as a reaction to Christianity..
If people become ANYTHING solely as a reaction, it usually won't last for long.
People need to have other reasons for their viewpoints..
Happy Campfire Friday to you too!! =)
PS: Maybe all Christians are really Christians because they reacted negatively to Islam, somehow..? ๐Ÿ˜‰

No religion is "responsible". My decision to become pagan was through a sincere desire to explore my cultural heritage. And through the exploration of my cultural heritage, a Celtic spirituality began to make more sense to me.
I was a Christian for most of my life, but my pagan path is not a reaction to that religion. I had stopped being a Christian for a number of years before pursuing a pagan path.

I left christianity because I didn't agree with it, but I didn't become pagan because christianity made me, I became pagan because I wanted to be pagan, and it made sense to me. lol I see where you're coming from, tho! ๐Ÿ˜‰
And happy campfire friday to you too... Too rainy here, maybe we'll push it back to sunday? ๐Ÿ˜‰ oh well.

i am Pagan because i felt more strongly that the Earth has the power in it, not that a God in the sky who looks like a man has the power. i claimed to be an atheist for years because i believe in evolution but i still felt this incredible draw toward a power, an undescribable belief that there is a higher power i did lots of reading and sortof formed my own tradition combining different belief structures from many of the Pagan and Wiccan traditions.
i LOVE your thought provoking questions by the way, even if i don't always respond i love to read them and mull them over

The only religion that holds any responsibility for my being Pagan is the religion that I am; Wicca.

Actually, for me, I never rejected my previous religion, Catholicism. (I continued to go to Catholic churches through 2002, though I first became Wiccan in 2001) However, there are a lot of aspects to Catholicism that I just don't agree with. (pope worship, the bible, YHVH being an only God, etc) But, I still think it's a valid paradigm for many people who live in it. And I believe our paradigm choice is the equivilent of choosing between a road map or a topigraphical map. Both say something about the territory, but neither encompass the whole of the territory Itself. If tommorrow I choose to grab a new map, okay. In fact, I recently began changing maps.

Well I left Christianity because it didn't work for me. I studied and found that paganism better fit my beliefs. I don't think that I *become* pagan because of any other religion. I think I was always pagan and just didn't know it.

answer: I left Xianity before I became a Heathen. It wasn't a reaction to Xianity. It was me leaving what didn't work and then finding what did.

Although I was raised in a christian household, I cannot say I ever considered myself a christian. Even at a young age, I realised that I did not agree with the values and ideals of the christian church. I have always had my beliefs, well before I realised there was a name for it.
So even though technically "paganism" is not a religion, the reason I self identify as a pagan is because "paganism" is the term that seems to most closely correspond with the beliefs that I hold. I am a pagan because of my beliefs, ideals and values, not as a reaction to something that I do not believe in.
Hope that makes sense. It's late, I'm tired ๐Ÿ™‚
