How were the methods of meditation discovered/created?

I read somewhere online that meditation was first experienced by hunter gatherers who would gaze into the flames of their fires and experience the different levels of consciousness. But since any sort of meditation wasn't developed at this time, how were the methods of meditation created later on?
Did they have a purpose for meditation, a goal that they hoped to achieve through meditation? Did they know why they wanted to "stop the mind"?
Or was it all just mistake/chance?

I doubt anyone really knows. But as towns started to grow in size, increasing numbers of people felt disillusioned with the way things were. Retreating in meditation was a natural rebellion against the unsatisfactoriness of life. In some societies, particularly India, people began pursuing meditation in isolation seriously. This meme caught on to become a major feature of religions that sprang from there.

I think we will never know. It would probably be a similar question if you asked who first learned to think....
To begin with, meditation is not merely one technique with a simple, straightforward definition. Any type of reflection, while focusing on your own mind could be called meditation in the widest sense.
Some techniques are directed specifically at achieving single-pointed concentration, others are directed at developing wisdom for example by observing what happens in our own body and mind.
So I would assume that as soon as humans learned to think, reflect, and began to observe their own mind, some sort of meditation was already done.
Meditation as such does not need to be as special as you might think. If you ever found yourself pondering on what you want to do with your life with a bit of focus, it could be called informal meditation. If you ever watched your thoughts and noticed how busy things are in your mind, you have already been doing a bit of basic meditation...

The practice of meditation originates from either the Buddhist or the Daoist practice, known in ancient China. The technique and goal are explained in the 'Falun Gong' book. Advanced practice is discussed in details in the Zhuan Falun Lecture. Both books and meditation demonstration video are free to download from the URL listed below. If you need any help, contact a local practitioner in your area for free instructions.
Falun Gong was found in 1992 by Master Li Hongzhi in China. About 100 million followers like the practice in over 80 countries worldwide. Falun Gong is an ancient practice for the body, mind, and spirit based upon the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. Falun Gong consists of five sets of powerful exercises.
Falun Gong, Tibetans, other Buddhists, and Daoists have been persecuted in China. The most offensive human right violation is the organ harvesting from the Falun Gong practitioners in China. Can you kindly sign a petition to stop persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China, please ?
