I understand that its a natural phenomena (not necessarily always forced) but which cultures took it on as a practice or ritual?
Does it apply to Hinduism?

Hi,
The origin of Astral projection goes back to the first humans. Like you said, it is a very natural part of life.
Descriptions of Astral projection can be found in writings and stories of many cultures in many different times. It is just that the terms used were often different. Terms like visions, prophecies, revelations, in the spirit etc are all different terms that describe the same thing.
Astral projection is religion independent, although some religions do practice exercises to get into the Astral. Religions that teach meditation as a core exercise also are usually familiar with the Astral, although it may be something that only the more learned individuals know and understand. This isn't always the case but many esoteric practices are often only taught to those who have earned a certain degree or status.
Sure, AP does apply to Hinduism, just like it does to any of the other legitimate religions, but I'm sure that only a small number of Hindus are aware of the Astral and practice exercises to go there consciously.
A great source to get more info on AP and how it applies to spirituality is here : www.gnosticweb.com
Hope this helped and f you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.
