Has anyone read either of those? If so, can someone help explain to me how these thoughts parallel with US government today, WOULD they work, have they ever been used? Thanks

Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy. He eventually became a man who lived his life for politics and patriotism. Right now, however, he is associated with corrupt, totalitarian government. The reason for this is a small pamphlet he wrote called The Prince to gain influence with the ruling Medici family in Florence. The political genius of Niccolo Machiavelli was overshadowed by the reputation that was unfairly given to him because of a misunderstanding of his views on politics.

A purely Machiavellin U.S. govt.=NO! that is a huge statement .Look for pardons granted to individuals for an example of Machiavellin actions.Or light sentences.

The alternative title for "The Prince" should be "How to rule a country, attack another and keep people under your thumb".
On a serious note, Machiavelli is suggesting a fool-proof method of gaining and retaining control over any domain that you oversee, as well as managing the people within. One either lavish gifts upon them (gifts that are stolen from the native country anyway) or they threaten them into silence.
If you're critical of the US policies, I'm sure you won't have problems drawing the analogy. Here's a hint. Dictatorship.
Good luck.
