Fellow Christians I am going through a spiritual crisis, please help me!? NO mocking Atheists please…?

Lately, I have been having doubts. I mean, I have always accepted and tried to be an instrument for The Holy Spirit, but most of the time it seems as if it is just my own willfulness and optimism that deceives me into thinking that it is The Holy Spirit working its will through me. I mean, I have never heard anything say “Hey this is The Holy Spirit/Jesus Christ. Keep up the good work.” You know what I mean? How does anyone KNOW that IT IS The Holy Spirit working its will?

I have tried praying and it doesn’t seem to work. Am I not being patient?
I have tried it Gregory, but it’s not working. I feel so down.

  1. never never never doubt the spirit ask god for guidance and he will guide you all the way he’ll find a way to show you what you need to know. if there is ever something you don’t understand or figure out ask the good lord to help you in understanding him he is just a prayer away.

  2. This “doubt” is your brain’s bullsh*t alarm going off. I suggest you listen to it instead of trying to suppress it.

  3. If you are a Christian then you know the answer and it’s satan doing his work to block that answer. PRAY!!!! Pray everyday and read your Bible for the answer. Talk to your pastor or another person from your church. You will hear that voice you are looking for. Maybe not right away, maybe not days or weeks but you will get your answer in one form or another. Good luck.

  4. The Holy Spirit is in every believer that has salvation in Jesus.
Have you asked jesus into your heart?
Did you mean it when you did?
    here is what God says
1 John 5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
1 John 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
1 John 5:10 He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself: he that believes not God hath made him a liar; because he believes not the record that God gave of his Son.
1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1 John 5:12 He that has the Son has life; and he that has not the Son of God has not life.
1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
If you asked God into your heart and believed then you have salvation and eternal life. If you did not believe then you do not have eternal life.

  5. Read the Qu’uran or the sacred Hindu texts or any other religious literature. Christianity isn’t the only answer. And half of it is based on other, more arcane religious anyways.
It’s faith, you’ll never have a concrete answer. Whether you believe it or not is self-perpetuated.

  6. the doubt in you is satin. thats what my grammy always tells me when i get anrgey or confused about religious feelings. god will use you eventually and your not a bad person for whatever your doing with your life,, god just puts thoughts like this in our minds because he wants us to believe them. but it’s him .. it’s not you

  7. The devil is putting doubts in your mind. Rebuke the thoughts in Jesus’s name. You have the power and authority to do it. It is the Holy Spirit working in you. Don’t let those thoughts enter. Keep rebuking them. Cast them down. Ignore them. (You are not the only one that’s had to fight the demons from trying to convince you otherwise.) The closer you are to the truth, the harder the demons try to attack your thoughts. Remember:
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

  8. “How does anyone KNOW that IT IS The Holy Spirit working its will?”
Ah-ha; yes; that IS the question, isn’t it?
As an atheist I have never thought that anything happened cos of the invisible sky guy – I have ALWAYS been responsible for my own actions and the results they bring.
Good luck in your search and may you continue to question and analyse.
Stephen F. Roberts: I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.

  9. I had always thought I was a Catholic. Then a Christian. But as I grew older and actually investigated religion, I realized I was a weak Atheist. I don’t claim to know if there is a God or not, but of all of the Gods I’ve read about, they all seem man made to me.
What you call the holy spirit is just you. Our ability to find fulfillment in this life is reward enough. All you can do is be the best you can be.

  10. What makes you think that doubt is a bad thing?
Any god worth believing in would be a god who is beyond our comprehension. Ultimately, if he is out there, your mind is going to have to kill the idols floating around in your head. That starts with doubt.
God is not someone you’re going to “get”. God is not a cosmic enabler who comes to make you believe that the power of sunshine and unicorn farts will turn your life into Happyfunsunshine land.
God isn’t going to find a way into your life if you don’t let go of Him and simply let him reveal himself to you.
    Lots of love,

  11. In the beginning was the LOGOS, and the LOGOS was with God, and the LOGOS was God.
The Greek word Logos comes roughly into the English as Word, but it call also mean message or reasoning, logic. That is why books have a prologue (before Logos). This means that God is truth, logic and reasoning. The only reason that atheists can argue is because God gave that git of himself. God will not ask you to do something completely illogical.
In my personal experience, I have found it helps to have a spiritual mentor. A person to look after you and say hey, you are getting off track. I have also found it difficult because I have never heard the voice of God, but have had the experiences to know that God wants me to do a certain thing. It is difficult. We must always check our feelings against sound reasoning and the scriptures.

  12. Hello Irish, All Christians have moments where they question.
How do we know if we are truly receiving revelation from God?
We have to grow in our relationship with God, through his word and prayer and meditation.
Revelation is more than simply a feeling it is what is made real to us by God.
Many times I have had doubts and I wold seek to see how my revelations compared to God’s word.
The Holy Spirit does not disagree with the word of God.
You can speak with other Christians concerning God’s revelation and see that there is agreement.
The most important part of Christian life is developing your relationship with God through his word and prayer and meditation continuing to grow in your relationship.
It is the Holy Spirit that reveals the truth and by revealing the truth makes it real to you.
We begin a relationship with God with the gift from God which is faith.
through faith we receive revelation form God.
Through revelation we begin our relationship. We become stronger in his truth by spending time with him,

  13. Surely the best thing you can do is to do what you think/feel is right. I myself am an aetheist but I have friends from Christianity and other religions, and none of them, even the very devout, have ever said that God actually spoke to them. According to Christianity, you were made in God’s image, so what you feel to be right is surely what God would want you to do. Help those around you, be good to the environment and I am sure the positive results will restore your faith.

  14. Its fate
“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.john 3:17
But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.”john 3:21

  15. Irish,
No mocking intended, and in all seriousness. Your brain is telling you the truth. Your brain is like…”umm…you want me to believe in what?…yeah right” The only thing for you to do now is get smarter, educate yourself unlike most christians. Study all religions, learn thier facts and thier lies. Make decisions yourself instead of trying to “hear god” or something of the sort, because it will never happen. Good luck, please email me with furhter questions or if you’d like some good books to read, I just got done readin one that basically summed up every religion imaginable, told there history, why and why not is was real, this is to include Atheism.

  16. Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! Don’t worry about it. I went through the same spiritual crisis and I survived it. Patience is not the issue here. Logic has gotten the best of you. Congratulations, you are on your way. Don’t listen to these Bible thumping fools.

  17. sorry i couldnt resist:
so, what you mean to say is you would rather have something that will fuel your spiritual delusions rather than wake up to the truth?

  18. You seem to be leaning on your own human, finite mind to gain understanding of spiritual matters. We need to lean on God in His infinite wisdom, in HIS strength and on His love. If you are looking for physical evidence, then you are being attacked by satan to doubt Truth in Jesus and The Word of God. Battle satan with The Armor of God, The Word of God (bible). We can claim victory in Jesus. IF you are a true christian (and not in name only), who accepts Jesus, believes in Jesus and the Word of God, in the deity of Jesus, have confessed your sins to The Lord, and are willing to obey and follow Jesus, then you will hear the prompting of the Holy Spirit (NOT audibly), but in your heart. You will Just KNOW. Read the Bible and continue to pray for Faith. Look up to Jesus, He is always looking down on you with love. God bless

  19. For it to be Real, you have to get serious — quit playing religion.
A disciple will become like his Master — Torah/Law observant.
Get in-covenant with the God of Covenants.
Repent to the Way of YHWH and of the Messiah.
Accept the yoke of the Kingdom, the yoke of the Messiah.
Do the will of the Father on earth as it is in Heaven.
Those who do the Torah-will of YHWH shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

  20. I used to be Christian but I hope you don’t mind me answering.
Having doubt and questioning isn’t positive for faith. You’re never going to see, hear, smell, touch or taste the holy spirit. It’s purely in your emotions and mind. Whether these feelings and thoughts are driven by a higher power or are just self-created thoughts is one of the views that differentiates theists from non-theists. The nature of faith is that there is no evidence, and if you start looking for more evidence and don’t find it the more empty you’ll feel.
In my view, the nicest phrase in the bible is that god is love. He’s here to make your life better. By questioning and doubting you yourself are making your life worse. If you already feel god’s love, you really don’t need to question and look further beyond what you already have. You’re not alone, the lord is your shephard. Read Psalm 23.

  21. Take inventory of your spiritual “fruit”.
If your life is bearing good fruit, it will show, and the work of the Spirit will be evident.
If not, you need to make a few changes.
    That’s all.
God loves you. God will provide. Relax.
Meanwhile, keep the faith, and browse my website, paying particular attention to this article about the Holy Spirit, who is the power behind every authentic miracle.

  22. The devil is the great deceiver He works through our minds to make us doubt.Continue to read your bible daily, pray daily and keep company with saints in the church

  23. Hi
I can only speak from personal experience and say that I completely understand the confusion and doubt that you are feeling at the moment.
I can only share that I managed to sink to the most lonely and lowest point in my life, both emotionally and spiritually. I had sunk so low, that I had lost all my passion for God and felt that I was completely rejected by him.
It was when I reached this place, that I knew that what I was “feeling both spiritually and emotionally was not in line with the Word of God (and was not of God). It was at this moment that I completely repented of every doubt and negative thought and emotion that I was experiencing. I passionately cried out to him seeking His forgiveness, mercy and grace. Even though my feelings were so “bad”, I knew deep within my spirit that with God all things are possible. I knew that only He could renew and change my thoughts and feelings, through His love.
Over the last year, my faith, belief, passion, hope and love in God are magnified beyond measure. He lifted me out of a literal pit of self pity, sadness, doubt (to mention just a few emotions) and has completely renewed my heart, mind, soul and spirit.
Yes praying does work. Yes it is that you are not being patient (just as I wasn’t at one time too). Yes it WILL work.
As Christian’s, we will face many, many hardships and challenges in our lives. God tests us to see the strength of our commitment, faith and character. His adversary hates us with a passion and wants us to fail. He will try anything to make us reject God, cause confusion, doubt our faith, be miserable and give up. He will use whatever means he can!
Conversely, God wants us to grow in love, faith, grace, mercy, compassion, wisdom and knowledge (in fact every quality found in Jesus can gradually be given to those who earnestly seek Him and know Him). We have a choice who to listen to and who to believe.
The fact that you have written what you have, shows that your heart is to please God and follow Him. My advice is to pray often, read His Word daily . Praise and worship Him through words and music and even dance (if you enjoy dancing) . Try to mix often with other Christians who are encouraging, uplifting, wise and are also seeking to do God’s will in their lives. Finally, put on the whole armour of God every day :
A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
If you have time to read, may I recommend a Christian author called Derek Prince, (who I believe was truly an example of a humble and totally committed man of God). A couple of books written by him called: Lucifer exposed, the devils plan to destroy your life. Also, You shall receive power: Receiving the presence of the Holy Spirit into your life, are simply fantastic. He has written loads, so you may find others that interest you even more. Do a search on Amazon if you wish to have a look at his other books which may interest you more.
May God bless you with a huge measure. Be strong, be faithful and believe that He wants the best for you. Sometimes we face challenges and hardships to strengthen our character and test our faith and commitment to Him. I shall pray that you are able to overcome your present challenge.
    Love Steph X

  24. Hi, you probably don’t want to hear what I’m about to write. And I’m not saying it because I’m an atheist or I’m mocking you but it seems to me that you are thinking for yourself and you’re not letting anyone else telling you what to think. Whatever you decide, make sure YOU and only YOU come to your conclusions. I left Christianity years ago because I felt every time I asked questions, I was pushed to think it was Satan work in my brain. It hurt to feel like I was letting Satan in my heart. Now I know I was only being a logical being.
If god exists, he wouldn’t be so cruel to make you a logical being and then snatch that away. Or would he/she/it?

  25. I’m late in the day but I hope you still get round to reading my answer…
The doubts that you are experiencing are normal. Actually they may be good and healthy for they should make you re-examine your faith and find a stronger foundation for it.
Personally I go through period like this for about 2-3 weeks every 18 months or so. I am desperate for a spiritual experience that confirms everything that I faith in (remember, faith is being certain of what you hope for). There are some people who will tell you that they have experienced God speaking to them in an audible voice, others have seen God heal people in miraculous ways, still others have spoken in languages that they have not learned (not the prayer tongue but real languages). Me, I have neither seen, nor experienced any of this, but I have experienced God’s leadings in ways that I could either say are circumstantial or God ordained. That’s the problem, most of my experiences I could just put down to making good Biblical decisions and by being a nice person things tend to work out better because other people are more willing to help you and deal with you…
I know that the Bible tells me that ‘blessed are those who have not seen and yet still believe’ but that doesn’t really offer me much comfort when I am going through the feelings that you are describing.
    So what do I do?
Normally I end up examining my faith:
    1) Reconsidering whether I truly believe God exists – which I do for to believe everything is a cosmic accident seems more irrational that believing in God.
    2) What I believe God to be like – If He is anything other than loving then He is unworthy to be God and so cannot be God, or at least I could not believe in Him.
    3) What hope there would be without God – none. I have tried living for me and found myself empty and desperate for some meaning in life.
    4) What God requires of me then – that I love Him and obey His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
Ultimately though it comes down to this – I would rather be delusional than wrong. I have seen what life was like without my faith and I felt the despair that it offered. Life with God is so much better, offers far more hope and gives me a reason to get up every day and serve Him with greater dedication and commitment. I have to believe in God because not doing so seems so contrary to my nature and reason for being that it cannot be true. The Bible offers such glorious hope:
Hope that I can be free from this body of death and decay.
Hope that I can be free from my feelings of self-centredness.
Hope that one day every tear will be wiped from my eye and I will be filled with everlasting joy and peace.
Hope that one day the One who created and sustains me will welcome me to His courts and will bless me in person.
Hope that everything will be restored and that peace will come to mankind.
Hope that all the evil will be purged from this earth and everything will be shalom.
Hope that I can be truly connected to the One who ‘is love’.
What normally happens for me as a result of experiencing these things is that I reassess what aspects of my faith are truly Biblical and which have been added on by man. Over the years it has really helped me to see that our relationship with God is the only thing that matters. When things are good with God I do feel truly connected. I know that I go through dry times but in the midst of these I must ask if that means that the truth has changed or if it is my feelings that have changed instead.
However, let me throw this into the mix for you:
The Bible says that we are to Jesus’ representatives here on earth. Those who abide in Jesus and his commands are truly his representatives. Therefore I ask you – have you heard a brother or sister in Christ encourage you that you are doing something good? Then you have heard it from the Father too. God doesn’t often speak audibly to us, He wants us to choose Him in the face of the problems we experience and the doubts we have. When we do this, it truly blesses Him and can truly strengthen us.
On the final aspect of the will of God, remember, God’s will is both sovereign and moral. You are referring to the aspect that is sovereign and this, the Bible tells us, cannot be thwarted by man… Your part is to keep the moral will of God, God will then use you to outwork His sovereign will, and when you see it happen you can either pass it off as coincidence or acknowledge that God truly did use you.
Let me give you an example as an encouragement. My wife and I had some friends who struggled to earn enough income to stay afloat. They made life choices which we wouldn’t have made and had a whole zoo of animals and 5 children with only one, relatively low, income. Their house was in a poor state of repair and many things were old and broken. I’m not painting a good picture but bear with me… My wife and I agreed to house sit for their pets whilst they were away on a short break. We knew that they were going through a tough time so we wanted to bless them and before they left for their holiday we offered to buy them a new oven (theirs was very damaged and the door had to be held closed by a tin of baked beans resting against it). We weren’t to know but just a few weeks earlier the wife of the couple had been experiencing doubts as you are. She prayed to God that if He really did love her then could He please provide a new oven somehow. There were many things damaged in her house and she could have asked for any of them but she asked for an oven. Similarly we could have offered anything but we offered an oven. Her faith was strengthened and she never doubted again to the same degree as she was doubting then (she passed earlier this year). God used us to bless someone and to strengthen their faith at the same time. Now we might have had ulterior motives (we were moving in and their oven was a bit of a state) but there were many such things we could have offered. Did God use us in our selfishly motivated gesture of grace to a friend? Maybe, or maybe it was just coincidence…
