Exactly what sort of meditation did the Buddha apply when he came to his great ‘awakening’/nirvana? e.g. vipassana meditation, insight, transcendental, walking, zen? Also, I am curious, did the Buddha attain enlightenment ‘all at once’ or in other words, during the same span of time or did he experience true ‘awakening; in various short bouts of time over a long period?

  • firstly, who said u r not a buddha. all siddharths have a buddha in them. or, all buddhas are siddharth first. the day u peep inside and are urself…u r a buddha. just be urself and ur the the awakened one…The Buddha

  • Buddhism is a great religion. In contrast, christianity is an inferior religion with inferior views. I am neither Buddhist nor christian so I am not biased. christians worship jesus christ who was actually the son of the devil

  • Anapanasati by itself is supposed to eventually lead to enlightenment, so I’d assume it’s that meditation method, but I don’t know. Anapanasati is concentration on breathing.

That second question, I believe, is one of the divisions of modern Buddhism. Theravada would say that it was a true awakening, but Zen, which is part of the Mahayana school, believes it happens in an instant.
