During meditation, should I allow my “visual mind” to let images come as long as I don’t “think” about them?

Hello, I’m just starting my meditation practice. Doing only 8-10 minutes twice a day. The big thing I’m focusing on is a state of “no thinking” where if a conscious thought arises, I bring my attention back to my breath. The one thing I’ve noticed is that my “visual mind” or maybe my subconscious, will start flooding my mind with seemingly random images, sort of like stream of consciousness stuff.

I am able to detach my “thinking” from the images, and merely able to witness the images without judgement or conscious thought about them.

My question is, I can “will” the images away using my mind if I want to, and return to a blank visual screen, but I’m not sure what is considered to be a “better” practice.

Do you allow the random images to come, and would you recommend I allow them, or just will them away back to a dark, blank screen?

(hope that makes sense)

🙂

Thanks in advance!

  • Bg 8.8 P Attaining the Supreme
In this verse Lord Krsna stresses the importance of remembering Him. One’s memory of Krsna is revived by chanting the maha-mantra, Hare Krsna. By this practice of chanting and hearing the sound vibration of the Supreme Lord, one’s ear, tongue and mind are engaged. This mystic meditation is very easy to practice, and it helps one attain the Supreme Lord.

SB 3.15.25 P Description of the Kingdom of God
The actual fact is that the Lord is nondifferent from His name. The highest realization of spiritual value is to chant the holy name of God, as prescribed for the age–Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

SB 4.8.57 P Dhruva Maharaja Leaves Home for the Forest
Narada advises Dhruva to meditate on the pastimes of the Lord, which is as good as the meditation of concentrating one’s mind on the form of the Lord. As meditation on any form of the Lord is valuable, so is chanting of different names of the Lord, such as Hari, Govinda and Narayana. But in this age we are especially advised to chant the Hare Krsna mantra as enunciated in the sastra: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

SB 4.21.42 P Instructions by Maharaja Prthu
In our Krsna consciousness movement, we accept this principle by rejecting four prohibited items–namely illicit sex life, intoxication, gambling and flesh-eating–and accepting the daily chanting of at least sixteen rounds of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra and daily meditation three times a day by chanting the Gayatri mantra. In this way one can keep his brahminical culture and spiritual strength intact. By following these principles of devotional service strictly, chanting twenty-four hours a day the maha-mantra–Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare–one makes positive progress in spiritual life and ultimately becomes completely fit to see the Supreme Personality of Godhead face to face.

SB 10.8.15 P Lord Krsna Shows the Universal Form Within His Mouth
Bahuni: the Lord has many names. Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam adyam purana-purusam nava-yauvanam ca. As stated in the Brahma-samhita (5.33), the Lord is one, but He has many forms and many names. It was not that because Gargamuni gave the child the name Krsna, that was His only name. He has other names, such as Bhaktavatsala, Giridhari, Govinda and Gopala. If we analyze the nirukti, or semantic derivation, of the word “Krsna,” we find that na signifies that He stops the repetition of birth and death, and krs means sattartha, or “existence.” (Krsna is the whole of existence.) Also, krs means “attraction,” and na means ananda, or “bliss.” Krsna is known as Mukunda because He wants to give everyone spiritual, eternal, blissful life. Unfortunately, because of the living entity’s little independence, the living entity wants to “deprogram” the program of Krsna. This is the material disease. Nonetheless, because Krsna wants to give transcendental bliss to the living entities, He appears in various forms.

SSR 5 Practicing Yoga in the Modern Age
These three words, namely Hare, Krsna, and Rama, are the transcendental seeds of the maha-mantra. The chanting is a spiritual call for the Lord and His energy, to give protection to the conditioned soul. This chanting is exactly like the genuine cry of a child for its mother’s presence. Mother Hara helps the devotee achieve the Lord Father’s grace, and the Lord reveals Himself to the devotee who chants this mantra sincerely.
No other means of spiritual realization is as effective in this age of quarrel and hypocrisy as the chanting of the maha-mantra: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

“We request you to chant HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA, KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE, HARE RAMA HARE RAMA, RAMA RAMA HARE HARE, and your life will be sublime.”

  • Amy and Jewel have offered useful replies. I would add just this:

If, after you’ve let them go and let them go and let them go, they still don’t let go of you, consider the possibility that they are there for a reason. Open your heart and mind and let them do whatever it is they are there to do (which is a different sense of letting them “go”). “Put your arm around them” and listen to what they are saying/ doing.

Usually such phenomena are sort of like just the twitchings of a muscle as you relax it, and, again, are not to be engaged with. But sometimes they can be a vehicle through which your mind is working something out, in which case it is beneficial to receive them with kind openness and humility.
    .

  • These are known as “hypnogogic images”, and they are basically your mind’s way of releasing built-up tension. You are new to mediation, and your mind has a lot of “stuff” to get rid of. Think of it, if you will, as a sort of detox for your brain. Not like what addicts go through–more like the stuff a good herbal mud wrap pulls from your skin.

So, yeah, they’ll be there for a while, and so long as you’re not actively “thinking”, they’ll eventually begin to taper off, and eventually they’ll stop showing up. If they really bother you, try this: Imagine all of them gathering together in a cloud. With each exhale, think “Haa!” and “push” the cloud away from you with each breath, until its all gone. Then go back to your “blank screen” or whatever image you’ve settled on for your regular meditation.

  • Sometimes during meditation we’re giving different vision, but because because not all vision are from God, sometimes it the other way around. You can consult your pastor, priest, or any church leader and share your vision they can help you a lot with that.

  • As a Christian, probably not the response you want to hear, but, here goes. We do not open ourself to the spirit world around us. We mediate on the Word of God and His goodness. I find is impossible to not think of something. I really think one must be dead to be void of all thought. Even if you are thinking of your breathing that is a thought. We live in a spiritual realm and not all those around us are for good.

  • read Joshua 1:8&9 it says to meditate on the word of
God both day and night and then you will prosper

meditation needs a contact make it Jesus

then the images can be tried by the Spirit of God in truth

In the name of Jesus, i claim the blood of Jesus to bind you…..(name or no name) and loose the power of the Holy Spirit, to bring cleaning, and truth and help, amen

close the eyes eyes and what do you see?
a picture then follow it and look for signs.

if there is any blackness seen then pray
“Jesus why do i see blackness show me what is wrong
if nothing comes to her in 10 seconds then have her pray
Jesus i put your precious blood between me and all my past sins and future fears, give me faith and belief, help me, amen

Psalon 103 all sins cast away and forgotten

then put into your thoughts “Whatever is good honest and pure think on these things.” Philippians 4:8

    If not already saved
    then have pray
Jesus come into my heart, forgive my sins and be my best friend, amen

    Revelation 3:19&20 is his promises

    David in Jesus amazing grace

Philippians 4 prayer peace power contentment (even with propblems) and joy ever more

the ultimate help and perfect healing is in heaven…Jesus wasnt complaining on the cross and wouldnt take stuff to make him fell drunk in the pain

“For the joy set before me i go to the cross, that you may believe.”

  • meditation is just focused concentration. if your focus is relaxation or a clear mind, no, don’t let images come to you. if your focus is on something particular, then let it delve.
