Does self-consciousness heighten your state of awareness?

For some reason I have the feeling it does because it creates a greater “consciousness of self”, yet I also know how it can feel like exactly the opposite.
Can anyone help me resolve this contradiction?

  1. I believe that it does.
In social work we are taught that being self-aware is the only way to be fully aware, not just of ourselves but of everything going on around us in its true form.

  2. I think it does. What do you mean by “yet I also know how it can feel like exactly the opposite. ” by the way? You mean you overthink yourself and end up convincing yourself you don’t exist?

  3. In the sense of physical perception, maybe a little
In the sense of spiritual awarness, no, cuase that can only come from a relationship with God.

  4. No i think the later part of what you said is true.
    Look up Zen
The art of zen is just experiencing\living and being able to take everything in. Consciousness is definitely a detractor from the nature of direct experience. but don’t take my word for it try some mushrooms.

  5. Except when alone, it’s kind of like driving a 747 down the street.
Noisy, obtrusive, unmanageable, and inconvenient to all concerned.
