Does hypnotism work?

Where in the UK can I learn to be a hypnotist on a one to one basis. I do not want so called distant learning or anyone sending me tapes/dvds or group/audience lectures. I am seeking one to one instruction in the art of hypnosis. No spam please just sensible info.

  1. Well i went to see a stage hypnotist a few years back and he didn`t affect me, stood for 3-4 mins before he told me to go sit down!

  2. It is generally undisputed nowadays that hypnosis is NOT an altered state of consciousness. There is no such thing as a hypnotic trance (at least not a trance in the traditional sense of the word).
That being said, however, hypnosis can work if the subject is primed in the right way. Others argue that it is the hypnotist socially manipulating the subject. Whatever the explanation is, if the subject really believes that hypnosis is real, it can be very effective.
Are you planning on being a hypnotherapist? or a stage hypnosist? The two are very different fields. There’s almost nothing to stage hypnotism, so long as you set things up correctly. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, takes a lot more responsibility and training.
So, in a nutshell, hypnosis DOES work, but not in the traditional portrayal that it often receives.

  3. Yes it does work, and I would recommend check with professional hypnosis orgnizations to find a trainer. The NGH (National Guild of Hypnotists, http://www.ngh.net) has many members in the UK, and also has a trainer/referral listing if you contact them. This would be a good start.
You could also check with your local health department and see if they recognize any particular professional group. From there contact them and see what they recommend.
    Hope it helps.
