Do Zen monks ever permanently damage their legs by sitting so long in meditation?

  1. Yes, they can. I was Buddhist at one point, and I knew a Zen monk who injured her knees by sitting too long through pain, and she advised us not to make this mistake. This is why they alternate between sitting Zen and walking Zen.

  2. Yes and no, depending on how one regulates his or her practices.
There are four postures in meditation namely; sitting, walking, lying and standing which are the natural postures of our daily lives.
