Do I need to use brackets when adding the word "AND" to a quote?

The original quote is:
“Film is a disease. When it infects your bloodstream, it takes over as the number one hormone; it bosses the enzymes; directs the pineal gland; plays Iago to your psyche. As with heroin, the antidote to film is more film.”
I wanted to make it much shorter. Is this correct or acceptable?
“Film is a disease… and the antidote to film is more film.”
Do I need to use brackets around the word “AND” if I’m adding it to a quote?

  1. Yes, you do. You’re putting words into the quote which are not in the original. You need to indicate that they’re not from the original quote.
