Lucas based the droids on characters from a samurai flick, the opening scrolling text was taken from Flash Gordon serials, he used battleship model kits to make the Death Star, used electric shavers as communication devices, so on and so forth. Star Wars is not “based” on any specific religion, time period or legend. Lucas wanted to use all of the myth he enjoyed to tell a story about good and evil. It’s a story that was told many times in many cultures.
