Did people know about the pineal gland and the light sensing organ in reptiles…..?

….. when they invented the third eye or is it just a fortunate coincidence?
“Some, including Rick Strassman, have suggested that the third eye is in fact the partially dormant pineal gland, which resides between the two hemispheres of the brain….
Various types of lower vertebrates, such as reptiles and amphibians, can actually sense light via a third parietal eye–a structure associated with the pineal gland–which serves to regulate their circadian rhythms.”

  1. I see things like third eyes, spirit guides and such as nothing more than dreamy, New Agey literary constructs. In other words, things which do not exist, but which can have a corresponding component in what I call “reality”.

  2. I think the words ‘third eye’ once again are just words used to try and explain that weird sensation some people veritably get at the point tween the brows when ‘meditating’ or ‘getting silent within’… yes, it’s sometimes New Age mumbojargon, but in all my years of you know what (I think I am fed up of calling it that after just a week on here… like I have to explain it everytime)… there has only been one occasion where it freaked me out.
I was so relaxed and TRYING to meditate when I actually felt like there was a hole between my eyebrows, like an acute awareness.
Hey, it only happened to me once and that isn’t enough for me to believe in a ‘hidden’ third eye, but… if it something that is beyond this realm of the absolute and the knowledge of which is too profound for most to believe then maybe it should stay hidden?
My favourite creatures are snakes and spiders and the first article I ever had published was about snakes and the above idea was briefly briefly touched upon… but I was only 12 then! lol
BTW I don’t believe in coincidences.

  3. The pineal gland is associated with the sixth chakra, which is supposed to be violet or indigo. If you want to know more about it, you might read up on the meditation practices and spiritual beliefs of Hindus and Buddhists.
Your observation about reptiles sensing light via the pineal gland is interesting.
During meditation it is not uncommon to see light when one’s eyes are closed in a darkened room. But it is not a sensing of the light in the room.

  4. Your third eye is your pituitary gland. You can ‘feel’ it if you close your eyes and look up, it will feel like pressure on it or sometimes like it is swelling. You can also sometimes see it as an indigo orb 🙂
    Love Light and Peace 🙂

  5. I, personally, believe in the third eye. I think it’s real and it has a purpose… I’m not surprised when I feel mine start to tingle with energy.
The pineal gland is inside the brain, and you can feel exactly where it’s located if you look straight up, you can feel a ‘pull’ in the center and that’s where it’s at.

  6. during tests with psychics and mediums while they are working … the pineal gland does come into play
I did study this somewhat at uni while doing psychical research
I wish I had a better memory though to give you some more info on it

  7. The idea of a “third eye” or “second sight” organ is ancient, and originated long before the glandular system was discovered or reptile anatomy was studied. You will see old Hindu texts that show drawings of people with an eye in the middle of their forhead. This was not actually representing a physical organ, but the ability of that person to percieve more than is apparent to others.
In more recent research that attempts to map physical organs to energetic centers in the body, the Pineal gland, Pituitary gland, and the Pons are said to create an energy triangle in the center of the brain which preserves the balance between the hemispheres of the brain and between the brain activity and the lower parts of the body. This triangle is also seen by some to be a gateway to the higher self and a center for increased awareness and focus on spiritual matters. (see references below)
It is likely that the pineal gland was identified as a physical representation of the “third eye” due to the increased energy that flows through this area during meditation or increased mental focus. No matter how the association occurred, it is obvious that the “third eye” was depicted in art and literature centuries before the Pineal gland was actually discovered. Thanks for the question!

    • where are these references below? I’m very interested in how to find out what research has been done mapping physical organs to energetic centers in the body. thanks.
