Did anyone of you experience an old hag attack?

Old hag attack have a scientific explanation that just doesn’t “cut the cheese” for me. Some of my friends and family members had their own spooky encounters and I’ve also talked to a lot of people online about the subject. So I’m curious, what did you experience and how do you explain it.
Have a spooky Hallowen people!

  • It has never happened to me, but I believe in it. i did a project on it for school. They try to explain it partially based on cultural influences, but people all over the world, from VERY different cultures experience it. The story is usually the same or very similar. Some people try to say that it is caused by suggestibility, but people who had never heard of it experienced it with, again, the same happenings. I read a book about it and we were warned that usually the number of people in the class that has experienced it doubles after reading the book. Our class proved him wrong, though. My husband has experienced it. His sister used to experience it when he husband went away to work unless my husband went to spend the night at her house so she wasn’t alone.
Have you ever experienced it yourself?

  • It sounds like a Baba Yaga or a Russian Nocnitsa. The best way to ward these attacks are to place a knife underneath the bed made of Iron or Steel, or plant some Baby’s breath at the window is said to deter the hag from your room too.

  • the “sleep paralysis” explanation doesnt do it for me either. years ago i had an experience in my ex-boyfriends house. i woke out of a sound sleep to find an evil looking creature sitting on my chest. it smelled awful. it sat and grinned at me. i wasnt able to move or scream for help. closed my eyes & opened them again, but it was still there. after doing this several times i was finally able to throw myself upright in bed. it was gone, but i was still able to smell it. i ran from the room screaming. i then found out that my ex and his brother both had the same exact thing happen to them in that room. it never happened in any of the other rooms in the house, and it has never happened to me personally since. i refuse to believe that 3 people could have an identical “sleep paralysis” episode. there would have been some sort of difference in our stories. i dont claim to know what it was, but i know for a fact that it was not a dream.

  • I am not a superstitious person but as children my sister and I slept in a third floor attic of an old Victorian row house. My father had earlier found test tubes and racks in an old cupboard in the loft when we moved in.

One night my sister and I had a nightmare and tried to get down the narrow stairs to our parents room but were blocked by this entity. I told my younger sister to go ahead while Tinder (the imaginary friend I spoke to as a child) appeared as a very bright light between myself and the entity. We arrived in our parents bed screaming.

Years later we were discussing this and my sister and I independently described the entity to others. We both saw the same thing, a tall moth-man like figure with green scales and red eyes with gossamer wings.

This was an old house and the scariest we ever lived in. As a young boy around six I had to go down to a coal celler there to bring up buckets of coal for the fireplaces. It was dark and creepy and I was so scared I used to close my eyes and collect everything blind and then run back upstairs.

As I said, I am not superstitious and think the bad dreams may have been caused by leaking coal gas stoves with which the bedrooms were heated, but the only thing I can not explain is my sister and I independently describing the entity and the glowing Tinder mentally holding it back while we escaped.

  • I have not, but my brother has, and numerous others who I know. It’s not the old hag, that is an old legendary figure from folklore. However, it is known as the “sleep hag” and it’s not really a being. This state is known as sleep paralysis. It is when the human body awakes in the middle of the night, scientifically between one o’clock and three thirty in the morning. The body become paralyzed, almost as if everything in your nervous system has been frozen. The only thing working is your mind. Now, here’s where it gets tricky. The reason why you have been awakened is because of a dream state that throws you out into reality again, but your mind is still dreaming. Since you can’t move at all and are still in a state of sleep, your mind tries to regain sudden-consciousness as it is called in psychology. This is where it tries to control the environment around you, simply put, your mind is telling you to wake up now! But, since you are cast from your dream state so quickly, the images of your sleep are filtering through into reality, not allowing you to regain your nervous system control, which in essence, keeps you paralyzed.

The figure of the sleep hag is your mind trying to create a figure of reality, but instead, a figure from your dream state is coming through instead and thus is how we get the term, sleep hag. Many sleep paralysis victims try to move or turn away from seeing this figure, but are unable to do so because their body is still in its sleeping mode. The only way to avoid this if it happens to you is to close your eyes and try to get yourself back into a dream-like state. This is apparently very well known in Europe and is also known as a phantasmagoria, which is the definition for “a dream-like apparition.”
