Dalai Lama – enlightened or not?

Hello.

I am Buddhist and I was watching a short video on You Tube about a trip the Dalai Lama took to France and in it he mentioned how he meditates on Bodhicitta in order to help him reach enlightenment.

This has puzzled me because I thought the Dalai Lama had already acheived enlightenment and had chosen to be reincarnated in a succession of human bodies in order to help others. Can anyone help me here- is His Holiness enlightened or not?

Thankyou very much for your time and help.

There are different levels of enlightenment… for a normal person he is enlightened… but for his level he is not yet.. for he has to achieve the enlightenment of Lord Buddha

What most of us think of as Enlightenment is just one experience. It is not the same as full or complete enlightenment, something only buddhas can claim.
Between that first experience and full enlightenment there is a long journey.
To us, looking at someone who has had what we in Zen would call first Kensho, we would say, ‘there is an enlightened man’.
He himself, though, knowing how far he has yet to go would say, ‘I am not yet enlightened.’
Yes?

Wouldn’t you think that someone that was so enlightened would understand that he should continue to search for enlightenment? The quest is never over. We will not know everything there is to know.

The Dalai Lama belongs to the Tibetan Buddhism tradition, or something like that, which says that (you wrote: ‘the Dalai Lama had already acheived enlightenment and had chosen to be reincarnated in a succession of human bodies in order to help others’). But maybe the Dalai Lama is being honest about really being unenlightened, but has the decision to go on the path towards Buddhahood. Or, instead, he could be what you said, and not honestly knowing this is what he is, think he needs to train in bodhicitta to become a Buddha. Whatever. If his teachings help you, use… Read more »

no he isnt he has not achieved nivana he holds of the final step to aid all living beings, but their are 3 types of boddhisattva in Mahayana and one type in Theravada, one type is the emination of a Buddha, which the Dalai Lama is said to be but this may be more calling Avalokiteshvara a buddha out of respect, the second is the true bodhisattva in the Mayahana tradition a being who holds back from enlightenment to aid all living beings which is what Avalokiteshvara (Dalai Lama) has taken as vows many eons ago, and the third type… Read more »

I see the fundie’s are out in force today. The Dalai Lama is enlightened and a very holy and spiritual man. He knows that there is always room for growth and the potential for learning new life lessons. This, in my book, just makes him a greater man.

What is enlightenment?

DECEIVED. If he does not believe in The Deity Of Jesus Christ, then he is just as delusional as the rest of the other cults.

One may attain Enlightenment at any given moment. The nagging question is one of SUSTAINABILITY… i.e., what one has to do when one has to deal with day to day activities as its contrast.

Namaste.

Peace be with you.

No he is not. In fact he is not very bright at all. Buddhists monks are well known to have considerable abilities associated with the occult and the demonic.

If you observe how the Dalai Lama lives his life, you will understand his mind. Then you won’t need to turn to YA for our guesses about his attainment.

Later thought: Missy, you will benefit yourself greatly by examining your own mind, rather than examining the mind of the Dalai Lama or anyone else. Pay attention to your own enlightenment — let other people take care of themselves.

how arrogant of someone to think they can designate the bodies they will be transposed to after death.. I would say the only way this coul dbe done for certain would be through memory injections such as in dark city or maybe the memory scans in 6th day, other than that how is a mere mortal man going to choose his path, in the future, in a reincarnation

I think he’s just a good shit talker and has misguided many just like this jesus guy

Misguided by Satan, and thus an instrument of Satan towards the wrong light (Lucifer, the Angel of Light), and a Humanistic belief system, also offering no Salvation of one’s spirit and degenerated heart, nor any reconcilement back to the Godhead… thus followers of the Dalai Lama die in their miserable condition of separation from God.

I don’t believe he is holy or enlightened. I heard he owned slaves and ruled a theocracy before his exile. If this is true, one can hardly consider him holy or enlightened.

Even someone who’s enlightened will say that they still seek enlightenment.
