Color consciousness in the african american community?

How did the color of African American’s skin in the past affect their portrayal among the white community? How did black people feel about being dark skin? Light skin?

  1. Becasue they were different, looked different, had different skin colors they thought they were inferior just because the difference in appareance and culture! Makes me sick..

  2. they feel good about it as it is themself and everyone loves themself regardless of their race, religion or the colour of their skin.

  3. In the past there is clear evidence that some African Americans believed the nonsense about the superiority of whites and their need to be “guided” by whites.
Skin tone and other features associated with being African American are still a sensitive issue. Look at the cosmetic products still available and used by the African American community – skin lighteners, hair straighteners, etc. While choosing to use these products doesn’t necessarily mean that the user is “ashamed” of being black, there have been accusations that that is why.
And in the past and even today, lighter skinned African Americans do attempt, often very successfully to “pass” for white to obtain better employment, education, and avoid racism. Feelings among the rest of the African Amercian community in reaction to this vary, as one would expect – it’s not as if the African American community is one monolithic entity with only one mindset.
During the equal rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s “Black is Beautiful” became a powerful slogan, encouraging both men and women to stop using skin lighteners, dress their hair in traditional African ways, and often adopt aspects of dress drawn from African examples. In other words, to encourage people to be proud of being black and embrace their heiritage instead of trying to emulate the white community to gain acceptance.
