Can The Interface Between My Mind And Body Become Whole Again?

When I was a child, I learnt to disconnect from my body.
It is a survival mechanism one employs while under extreme stress.
Now that I am a grown up I feel disconnected from my body all the time.
I have to get it into my head that the world is safer now.
I have to tell my subconscious that I am no longer under threat.
I can’t seem to get it to sink in. I can’t seem to relax. Any advice?

  1. I’m sorry that you had such stress as a child. You found a way to cope that is not working now. It’s good that you feel safe now. If you are having trouble trying to cope with your new found safety, maybe you should find a counselor or therapist to talk with. Sometimes when we are faced with survival issues, the mind clicks in with a rescue, but then sometimes we need help with other situations less threatening.

  2. Self-hypnosis might work for you. You by-pass the conscious mind and speak directly to your sub-conscious. The sub-conscious does only what it’s consistently and persistently told- it doesn’t question, think or use logic. This is why you can’t “tell” your subconscious mind things. You sub-c mind knows you change your mind all the time, and don’t always do or mean what you say, so it ignores you. (Example: saying ‘”I want to feel safe” but yet acting with fear)
You can download a script, or record your own on a basic tape recorder. Or both. See what type of message appeals to you most (building self-confidence, calming fears, overcoming insecurity, self-acceptance, relaxation, etc.)

  3. Make peace with God. In my experience, I felt the same as you. When I turned my life over to Jesus, I experienced an inward peace that is indescribable. Knowing that God is ALWAYS in control and that EVERYTHING you experience, both good and bad, is for a reason. “For every thing there is a season, and a time for every purpose under Heaven”.

  4. Mary Jane–Seek help. This is a serious phycological issue. you aren’t going to get over it by thinking positive or self-hypnosis. In my opinion this will only prolong the problem. And I know, because I do the same thing. You need to talk to someone, get therapy. It will help enormously!
If you can’t afford a phycologist, consult your doctor and see if you can get a consult. Sometimes your insurance can be billed. There are also social programs that can help those who can’t afford it. The mental health system in the US is pretty broken, but you still may be able to get some help.
Seriously, I cannot stress enough that you can’t think yourself through this. You need professional help, sis. Do what’s good for you–get the help you need to get yourself a better life.
