Can someone please tell me if True Buddha School is a cult or a legitimate Buddhist organization?

My close friend joined this buddhist sect from Seattle WA sometime ago and ever since she joined she’s been acting really weird. She would chant her master (Grand Master Sheng-Yen Lu)’s mantra WHENEVER there’s any problems. The problem is IT NEVER WORKS! For example she’s really into the stock market and just a couple days ago she had a stock that was dropping like mad and she just sits there chanting her master’s mantra hoping it would come back up! I was so fed up with her weirdness I decided to do some research on my own about True Buddha School. What I found out was truly mindboggling. It turns out her master was accused of rape by his disciples. Please see this link and make your own judgements: http://www.shcstory.com/mystory.html Apparently Sheng-Yen Lu is from Taiwan and a self-proclaimed reincarnated LIVING BUDDHA! However no Rinpoche from any of the REAL tibetan tantric buddhist sects acknowledges him. Someone please help me talk some sense to my friend.

its a false religion… so its a cult

Ken Singapore

True Buddha School is a cult, the master Lu Yen Sheng has no real lineages from any of the 4 Tibetan Sect…it is considered a black sect, black sects used to be subdued by Guru Rinopche, the lotus borned in the past but cults like True Buddha School reemerges. The only real Vajrayana is of the 4 Tibetan sects-Nyingma,Sakya,Kagyu or Gelugpa.

Totally agree. First even the name is wrong , why name your school true Buddha? Are there fake Buddha’s? You dont even understand the word Buddha , BUddha is BUddha, There’s no fake or true. Buddha means Enlightened one , if YOU are enlightened then there’s no true or false in fact you go beyond that so how can there be any true or false. When reading articles all he talked about is self praising himself whether directly or indirectly. Its like reading fairy tales. But there’s one thing he manage to did well and that is introduce people to Buddhism and did lots of charities then again Bill Gate charities are no less and if you are a master of Vajrayana then you must show humility . Look at the way he dresses so many ornaments and rings ! It portrays vanity.

tbs

True Buddha is short for
True Instrinsic Buddha Essence. This Buddha Nature exists in all of us.
It does not mean fake/ true buddha.

Its not the name of the sect we r discussing about, but the whole action this master did, and the way he conduct it… i have dig out some of this master dark history and pictures, which i am so disgusted to see it again,
a buddhist monk or master:
1. DOES NOT CLAIM HIMSELF to be a LIVING BUDDHA.
2. DOES NOT ENCOURAGE BUDDHIST to eat meat. ONly when the condition force them to do so.
3. DOES NOT appear in EXCESSIVE LUXURY.
4. DOES NOT go hav FUN like SWIMMING WITH LADIES in BIKINI ( i have seen these and i am so disgusted )
5. what a monk should not do i think we know in our heart and conscious.

Had been in this cult for more than a decade, following my mother when I was young. I am already out of it, and would like to advise those that are still inside. I admit we are the kind of hardcore family that will even spend money on tickets to ‘pursue’ him like a pop-star. Recently met a friend whose boyfriend and whole family had been inside for almost two decade, and she is joining it. Sadly, there is nothing i can do about it to stop her from going deeper. Suddenly got reminded of this and did a google search and here is where i landed. If not for this, I wouldn’t even be here writing this post over here. Think about it. Why would someone will even bother to frame him? Because somebody cares. Few years back, when news of his scandal broke out, I was like you all. In disbelief, thinking someone must be framing him. Coupled with his teachings, we are not supposed to even entertain this kind of thoughts ( im sure those who are inside will know what i mean, and many many bad ppl trying to frame the TRUE BUDDHA.) and it happens that he has to bi guan xiu lian at such a timing.(to avoid the police in actual fact). It was so obvious yet all of us didn’t suspect (or dare) to question ourselves at that ime. Not because we are stupid, but we are blinded by our hopes and beliefs, especially if we grew up with TBS. Number of years inside is not something to boast of even(doesn’t say about the truth), and when u decide to drop this heavy burden of yours someday, you might even feel ashamed. It should NEVER be a reason why you want to continue staying inside, and come on, face reality(even if u spend almost all ur life worshipping him). And you don’t have to feel stupid, learning is a part and parcel of life. Even many people of reputable status are still inside it, despite its blatant lies. Sun Wu Kong doesn’t even exist and can even interact with him, and not forgetting his famous drinking coffee with this and that buddha. BULLSHIT. Hope this helps, you can find this on google easily.

all religions are cults, so your question doesn’t make a lot of sense…

that whole religion is a cult They dont believe in the trinity…

Justsyd

You need to show the information to your friend. This happens in every religion. It’s such a shame. This is not what Buddhism is about.

I have scoured the internet, and there does not seem to be a clear answer. Some buddhist organizations seem to recognize him, some do not (Tibetan Buddhism is not the only sect with Tantric Focusses or Practice). There could be a variety of reasons for both. Don’t worry so much about the chanting problem. The way your friend is practicing the chanting is not how True Buddha School teaches, which in brief is: “iv. In order to feel the effect of the Mantra, one must chant whole-heartedly”. Chanting a sacred mantra whole-heartedly is usually impossible while focussed on material gain.
Whole heartedly practicing mantra is not done for material gain, but rather for spiritual enlightenment. I’ve checked out their main site, and though their are some quirky things – it seems to reflect a genuine tradition.
Has your friend been practicing Buddhism regularly before seeing this guy? It doesn’t sound like it. My recomendation would be for your friend to read some of the original words of the Buddha (Guatama – the first one). For the sake of having a contrast to possibly questionable practices, I would strongly recomend she inquire to original sources of this man’s teachings. If he recomends mantra, research mantra and compare. If he recomends tantra, research tantra and compare. Accusations are not enough to de-bunk the truth.
The weirdness you speak of is normal. Often when someone has spiritual experiences, they can no longer act in ways that people around them expect. Why? Because they have loosened those very expectations within themselves and are less reliant upon them. There is nothing wrong in this. However, it sounds like your friend might not be penetrating the true meaning of True Buddha School. Regardless of whether or not he’s a buddha, his website has some qenuine historic mantra practice information, that he has re-written as his own with slight differences. And genuine mantra practice, though it can start with a material world kind of focus, certainly does not ‘end’ in the stock market.

your question raises so many issues. i had a girlfriend from china who was a devoted follower of the true buddha society . she has not done very well here in the west and is presently in a psych ward in my town, she is having a tough time of it., i hope that things get better for her. i am familiar with the label ‘cult’ i was a teacher of transcendental meditation for many years and some fundamentalist christians seemed to take a lot of delight in bestowing us that label but at the end of the day there was a tremendous body of evidence that tm was beneficial in many ways. i read a little bit of info from the true buddha society[ there is very little in english, mostly mandarin]
and what i saw did not allay my concerns for my friend. it consisted of very flashy subjective experiences expressed by the grand master which seemed to me to be self serving to show his students how advanced he was. i read a couple of discourses like that and came to the conclusion i didn’t like the direction which it seemed to take, maybe i missed the boat but i didn’t see the humility which is one of the cornerstones of buddhist theology in evidence. i could be wrong, i did not study it deeply but that was my perceeption. there was much more that could be said but enough for now, this is not meant to dis buddhism, i think it’s a wonderful teaching which stands as a testament of self discovery[ or selfless discovery if you prefer].
so, in conclusion, yes i also have some reservations about the true buddha school

Rings a bell

Stay away from the True Bhudda School, it is only focused on their leader. Chants are directed to their leader, not the bhudda’s that should be worshipped.
I have been to a dutch TBS temple, it is very focused on the financials and ‘lonely’ people. For instance one has to pay (a lot) for a prayer chain and the books (copied) containing prayer texts.
This is a cult which abuses of buddha teachings, Lu Sheng-Yen is indeed a self-proclaimed buddha. If you just read his statements closely you will see the way he is trying to proof himself, which by itself is strange already. He’s claiming to have special powers and all the things false prophets talk about usually…
STAY AWAY, THIS IS A SECT!

Michael

It is late reply but…
as I do not know how do you come up with the black sect.
there are a lot of people I know been helped by the master. even you do not know him, sometimes he might help you too.
also if TBS is a cult, then I am sure that the master already in trouble.
as for Vajrayana, yes those are 4 Tibetan, and master has refuge with all of 4 Tibetan, includes small sect.
also I been a member for like 17 years, if I will be confused, I already been confused for 17 years…

Victoria

I agree the grandmaster is no cult. He has master the color rays that us required for his ascension. He is an ascended master. I am. A master also but I am. Still. Undergoing initiations. I. Also. Understand from. The prime creator that the grandmaster will be my future mentor n I’ll be meeting him in two months. I have no affiliation with Buddhism n I been under the guidance of the archangels till now I need a mentor. You can. Not argue with people who do not believe. Just know what u believe is right because you have free will. Life is complicated by so many egotistical ways of people. The battles will never end. Work on urself n be the best that you can be then u can help others see the light. The truth will be the truth. The grandmaster deserve the title Buddha cuz it was given to him not that he proclaimed. I believe in him as I am. Also an ascending master. I connected with him esoteric all and I will become his disciple one day. I hope to see more masters come from him as he is doing a great job. His merits and his wife is just stupendous. They will be honored even after he ascends.

Buddhas and Bodhisattvas don’t need food and drink of course, but it’s a long standing tradition in Buddhism to make offerings to them of food, drink, lamps, incense, etc., because this fosters a spirit of giving in the giver and helps to create a “bond” between Buddhist practitioners and Buddhas that they might feel an affinity for, etc. It’s believed that the spiritual “essence” of such things reaches the intended recipients, and Buddhists will often dedicate any merit that they might receive from good acts like this to the benefit of ALL sentient beings.

Justina Tay

RELAX RELAX but ALERT ALERT. It is wiser to guard our own thoughts. All arises from yourself. LU SHENG YEN is just as it is.

Jun

Hey, the articles that you read are surely fake, it’s something called the haters. If you want to know more about it maybe you should read the content of the true Buddha society and the teachings that master sheng yen lu teaches and judge for yourself. I am 21 years old now and had been a disciple since I was young. News like ‘raping’ is definitely an easy way for others to ruin someone’s good reputation. So, I don’t want to tell you what to believe in but you have to research yourself and you’ll be surprise that true Buddha society is one of the best religion/guidance in life you can ever find.

FIRST OF ALL ,HOW CAN ONE FOLLOW A MASTER THAT EATS MEAT?? THAT IS AGAINST THE FIRST RULE OF TEACHINGS. A REAL BUDDHA WILL GIVE HIS BODY FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS,. SECOND, HOW CAN ONE PRAY TO THIS SELF PROCLAIMED LIVING OR REINCARNATION OF BUDDHA OR WHATEVER…. Haahhaha….WHY DONT WE PRAY TO THE ALREADY ESTABLISHED BUDDHA, INSTEAD OF THIS SELF PROCLAIMED BUDDHA. WHAT A JOKE. ALSO TO THINK THAT THERE ARE THOSE THAT DOES THAT IS REALLY UNTHINKABLE.

Sunseeker

YES… SO TRUE,
I WAS A VEGETARIAN…. EVEN I JUST A LAY MAN, NOT A MONK
HOW COULD A SO CALL ‘MASTER’ EAT MEAT…..AND ITS OK ACORDING TO HIM….THIS IS MOST DISGUSTING

Hey

We ate meat but we didnt kill it or heard it being killed or saw it being killed, theres a lot of genre of Buddhism u should learn dude

tbs

Killing and Eating are two differently issues.
1st precept – do not kill. You do not want to kill is because you do not want to create a bad affinity with that sentient being in the future.
As per eating, we should refrain from eating 3 kinds of meat.
1. Meat you have killed.
2. Meat you have HEARD that someone has killed.
3. Meat that been killed on behalf of you.
In tantric Buddhism, cultivators generally chant the following before eating:
1. Food Purification Mantra ( one of manjurshiri bodhisattva mantra)
2. Great Mandala Offering Mantra to offer to the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, dharma protectors etc

tbs

Eating Meat does not mean you are not real practicing Buddhist. Being vegetarian does not mean that you are a better Buddhist.
Actually before Shakymuni Buddha ( the real Buddha as you referred), there has been endless numbers of Buddhas. After Shakymuni Buddha, there endless numbers to come..
(as written in heart sutra, Buddhas of the ten directions from the past, present, and future)
Hopefully one day you become a Buddha, then you realize what you what you have written.

Natsok Rangdrol

Through practicing the instructions you may have conditioned super knowledge and various kinds of visionary experiences. Many meditators, who at this point do not connect with an experienced master, become infatuated with these seemingly good qualities. They intoxicate themselves with the poison of pride, boasting of their clairvoyance and miraculous powers not knowing that these are only relative or superficial qualities and not the ultimate result of complete enlightenment. Ordinary people who don’t have a deeper understanding, believe that these meditators are perfected masters who have achieved a high degree of physical as well as spiritual perfection and paranormal capabilities or enlightenment. And that leads to the danger of creating disaster for both self and others. So be careful. excerpt from “Heart Lamp” Tsele Natsok Rangdrol

I’m a previous student of Zhen fo Zhong sheng yen lu, by the way I’m in Singapore. Had read lu book it’s all basically talk about all the freaking bitch stories about phenomenon .I also encounter spiritual phenomenon but ‘ that thing is a demonic being why? I use lu heart mantra and dedicated to my friend for merits increasing.it leads to killing the person life and make other people get into trouble.
The another bad things happen is the more u cultivation and brought lottery. U will win the next day but the spirit trying to destroy your life. Lu indeed is (not) a real living Buddha but a witchcraft because ones u invite his mantra and learning his yoga it kills you slowly with his demonic spirit and can cause you to possession of committing suicide. This lu statue I had smash the statue into pieces when the Buddha eye is on.alot of true Buddha former student had make a police report against lu for his teaching and fake works

Well, it is so easy to defame someone without actual research or understanding of the whole things. Believe come from affinity whether a person or a subject. So may i ask who is a cult? A Buddha or yourself?

Ray Liang

I’m shocked at the comments I’ve just read. Its so easy to defame someone on the net without knowing the true answers. Sorry if my english is bad because its my second language. TBS shouldnt be focused on finances especially the books containing prayer texts. Everything should be pay/donate-as-you-wish. Even the grandmaster himself said that there are people out there using the TBS as a mean to make money.
There are devotees of TBS that believes by chanting the grandmaster’s mantra they could gain monetary rewards, such as the original poster’s friend. Thats not what TBS stands for. sounds to me that the original poster friend had misunderstood the true meaning of TBS.
I would love to explain more but I got to leave for work.
Take care and lastly, Oh guru lian sheng siddhi hom.

1. Everyone prays. You want something you don’t like to go away, you pray. You want something you don’t have, you pray. The more fundamental issue is WANT. Buddha will not interfere with the stock market. He teaches impermanence. Change is norm. No person gains anything ever. That is what Grand Master Lu teaches too. Even if he could, Grand Master Lu will not alter the natural course of stock rise or fall. But believe it or not, many disciples bug him for advice on which stock to invest all the time.
2. There is no fault in hoping for/working towards financial abundance. There are methods in Tantric Buddhism to help you become wealthy. But believe it or not, all the methods include practices of chanting, prayer, meditation, and visualization. The concept is “entice with desire, then lead into Buddha wisdom.” Over time, you will learn the biggest secret, to be wealthy, you have to love to GIVE to others. That is the gist of praying to the many fortune deities in Tanttric Buddhism.
3. Anyone can allege anyone else for wrongdoing. You sound surprised. I’ll stay away from what a supporter/disciple would say, but the truth is the case was dismissed because of lack of evidence. I’ll tell you this, in this world, it is very commonplace for love/longing to turn into hatred.
4. Self-proclaimed Buddha? Ah..you read the wiki. His disciples began calling Grand Master Living Buddha long before he achieved buddhahood. Now if someone is truly enlightened and has achieved the same transcendental freedom as Gautama buddha himself, is he allowed to state so? While we are on that subject, we authenticated Gautama, Buddha himself? But if you really a fan of Tibetan Buddhism and rinpoches, hope this helps you: http://ccyy.myweb.hinet.net/Tibet/19810101.htm. If you don’t read Chinese, use Google Translate. But I’m sure the photos are pretty self explanatory.

I recently joined the True Buddha School after observing my mom who has been a TBS disciple for more than a decade. I’ve heard the controversies & read a lot of off-putting material. Grand Master even personally blessed me (along with a lot of people of course) Upon meeting him, the 1st thing that struck me is that he seems so solid in his ordinariness. The second is that I sensed there is nothing wrong with him. In all these years, he has spread his doctrine & has never been known to force anyone against their wishes. The only “scandal” attributed to him is that one case in Seatlle, which could be a scam. I am of course not pleased to read all these as I believe my lineage guru should be above reproach BUT the practices revealed by him if practised correctly with pure intentions should work. In the end, it is up to oneself to decide where to draw the line. According to my research, quite a number of Catholic priests are notorious for child abuse & tithes are mandatory yet it has not stopped Christians from going to church & give praise to the Pope. I do not feel TBS is a cult. Its always give-whatever-you-can. Its the people involved who give a lot of trouble. Go meet Grand Master for yourself & he will see that he is harmless. I cannot vouch for his many disciples though. I myself is not above reproach either.

MW

btw it is a legitimate buddhist organisation i.e. it is lawfully registered if not recognised by all. For those who are in doubt, just follow your heart. Although I’m all for Grand Master’s teachings, there is also much that I observe/heard that I personally do not much like, mainly how things are run but I do not complain as we all do the best we can & it is not easy to run an organisation as large as TBS. Also, not every religion is for everyone which is why devotees always say its one’s calling. In actual fact, he is propagating the realizations of past Buddhas. Granted his methods are less mainstream but from what I gathered, GM isn’t promising you material gain, he’s trying to help you to reach beyond this vicious cycle of life. Sometimes I wonder why he bothers coz if you really really look around you, the human condition has reached a catastrophic point, almost beyond hope. Case in point: read the news around the world everyday. Of course, there is beauty & goodness out there to balance it but prob not enough imo.
Keep an open mind & God Bless (as they say)

Tam

Your friend has joined The True Buddha School not for a religious reason but only hoping for financial gain ,therefore it’s not the Grand Master’s fault if she has misundersood him. If she or anyone has read his books and teachings they would’ve understood the true meaning of chanting. As Master once said if we can just sit and chant for monetary rewards ,we need not work and all be rich by now !!!
The Grand Master has never taught us to hate , kill, bear grudges ,but only to let go, give and respect all religion. The Grand Master ‘s never command we obey his orders, but only guide us to become a better person as all true religion teaches, so how can The True Buddha School be a Cult ?
As for the accusation of rape by a disciple ,in any schools you will always find good pupils and bad pupils ,unfortunately she’s one of the bad ones. Karma will catch up with her.
I totally agree with Ray Liang ,well answered

Find me another spiritual leader who can writes more than 250 books. Read up and understand. Buddha said sentinel beings are blind by their individual karma, why? All is down to affinity, strong or weak, it doesn’t matter.

Jordan Lim

I’m a student of True Buddha School since 1991. I”m not only a disciple of Grand Master ShengYen Lu but also a disciple of H.H Sakya Trizin and Late Venerable GuanXuan. I’ve seen a lot of people practising the dharma without actually reading any one of the 200+ books written by GM ShengYen Lu. This of course leads to improper understanding and practises of the dharma. As mentioned, the heart mantra is also like reciting buddha names in the pure land sect. It’s not a tool to solve your problem or any other magical spells. It’s a medicine to your mind. The only difference between buddha name and heart mantra is. One is reciting the name of the buddha sambhogakaya, the illusious light body while the mantra is the buddha essence. We are just lay man not buddha to decide who is buddha or not as we don’t process the ultimate wisdom. Can you judge Jigong base on his character? Don’t judge other but look within to find the answer. Everything that we chant repeatly is to calm our mirror liked mind. Practise meditation to attain stillness so that our mirror will shine and the truth will emerge.
In fact, there’s no one who can really tell you who is buddha or not. We are practising buddhism to attain enlightment not to prove to the world. So be it! If buddhism is easily understood then I’m a buddha now, Isn’t it? It’s sad to say that many people are spending time critising GM ShengYen Lu instead of spending time to practise the dharma one deem fits. Why create Karma for oneself?
If you are interested in True Buddha School, there are more than 230 books available, go and read them without prejudice. Share it with the students there. There are about 5 millions disciples from True Buddha School, go to them if you’re in doubt.
FYI, those scandals about GM are all fabricate including those photos (using adobe photoshop).
Personally I’ve witness GM ShengYen Lu miracles a number of times. That maybe because I’m with gifted clairsentience since young.
I hope those interested in True Buddha Dharma pracise it with diligence and right intention.
Namo Amitabha.

Well, i really strongly advice you to open your eyes, and just into your conscious and heart deep inside, the basic of buddha teaching the basic of all.
A master or buddhist monk as simple as it is, is not about the outlook and appearance, but how he or she as a buddhist monk and so called “master” appear in public, a monk or master do not appear in public with excessive luxury, like what we witness on this “master” of yours, plus you do not go swimming with ladies or women in bikini… OMG OMG what is that!!?? there are proves which i hav so disgusted with it already… no you don’t encourage Buddhist to eat meat, late Buddhas eat meat because they have been offered by people as an Dhana, as offering… a true master DO NOT claim HIMSELF as BUDDHA..!!! that is OUTRAGES… OMG pls wake up bruh… i believe u actually understand these simple things to witness if it is a true Buddhist master or monk… there are a lot of FAKE buddhist teaching in these world already, to notice a true buddhist teaching, its all in your heart, does your heart and conscious tells u something when u hear or see something s not right? Beware of FAKE Buddhist teaching.
hope you wake up soon, Amitofo

Gareth

There are a couple of recurring themes among the comments here – people repeating criticisms they have heard elsewhere and/or with a limited understanding of Buddhist teachings.
I recommend watching this series of videos, which disucss in detail why TBS is not a cult, and why Grandmaster Lu is the real deal.

I suggest you better to leave true buddha school early and please save your life . If you want a much more powerful living buddha just go and see wang ko yee .if u believe lu sheng yen is so real there will be many witness lu is just an actor not a real buddha.
If you continue to prastice his tantric yoga i wish you good luck and prepare for your death bed soon not cursing you. But i as a former tbs student telling you for your own good to save your life. Dont believe in lu sheng yan words .
