  • I found a description of chakras here:http://www.thirdeyehealth.com/chakras.html, but this is a web site that is interested in selling you something to “open the chackras”. I have no idea of the effectiveness of the product.
Chackra means “wheel” when discussing chackras in yogas, they refer to wheels where energy centers join inside the body. Yoga excercises balance the energy flows through the energy pathways and remove blockages from the centers, enabling a practitioner to be able to be free of the disharmonies caused by energy blockages.
In buddhism, you must have an initiation from a master before the master will give instruction on chakras, but I believe there is some discussion of chackras in this book about the Kalachackra:

  • I’m really not too sure if this is right, but, what little I do know is that the Kundalini Shakti, or the Strength of the Serpent, is one that rises from the coccyx and goes up to the roof of the head.

In it’s passage, it passes through a set of Chakras, literally – Wheels, denoting the turbulent planes and the Mandalas, literally the plane, denoting the placid or steady planes.

The rising through the turbulent and the placid require different disciplines to achieve the smooth transition of the meditation, if I’m not mistaken.

However, only someone who is an expert in yoga could answer you correctly.

    Hope this helped a little.

  • chakras are “energy centers” located on various places on the human body (the main seven are along the mid line of the body from head to toe) and are thought to cause misery and unhappiness if they are not “balanced”. many eastern traditions like yoga and ayurveda use the chakras to restore the “health” of the individual. chakras are NOT discoverable by western scientific methods however, and should be taken, like all things unprovable, with a grain of salt.

  • They are supposedly areas of energy on our body. Supposedly, these areas, when functioning normally, are open and have a balance of energy leaving and entering the body. if a chakra is blocked, then there is illness or anxiety. Reiki therapists use natural crystals and stones and hover their hands over your body to open the chakras.

I say its a type of bull. Exercise, eat well and enjoy your life – your chakras will be just fine.

  • There is also a purely psychological explanation. If you’ve ever “felt a lump in your throat”, or “felt it in your gut”, these sorts of feelings occur at chakra locations. Some people ascribe a spiritual aspect to them.

  • A “chakra” (Sanskrit for “wheel”) is an “energy center”. The underlying belief is that living things have some sort of metaphysical energy to them, and that the main “clumps” of these are found at the seven chakra locations. The belief goes on further to state that the chakras can be “opened” during meditation.

The chakra locations DO actually match the locations of glands in the endocrine system, so make of that what you will.

  • Here’s a short answer:

    What is a Chakra Exactly?
Chakras are our energy centers. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura. Their function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. They are associated with our physical, mental and emotional interactions.

  • It’s (in the Hindu belief, I think. I could be wrong) a center of spiritual energy, basically.

Biu phrased it better than me. =)
