Atheists: Deconversion as spiritual awakening?

Since fully recovering from the indoctrination of my youth and stepping free from the prison of superstition a couple of years ago (Yes, it sounds overly dramatic, but that is genuinely how I feel, so please excuse my turn of phrase.) I’ve undergone such dramatic changes in attitude and thought process that I don’t know what else to call it but a spiritual awakening. I can think of no other word that means “the whole or the essence of a person” than spirit, though I don’t believe in souls at all. Have any other atheists who have been theists or who believed in some superstition: ghosts, chakras etc had that experience and is there a better label for it?
I feel fully free in thought, happier and more whole than I have ever felt before. I feel literally as if I walked out of a prison that had open doors all along and I do not only refer to theism or religion. Many delusions and presumptions have been questioned and found false during this ongoing process. It is not that I think deconversion caused it, so much as it was just one more symptom of a greater process. Can anyone relate to that?

☑ Dreamstuff Entity

More like an intellectual awakening, really.

Prove that I don't exist

Personally I go with “liberation”

It’s called “Enlightenment”, and yes it feels great.

I use the term ‘enlightenment’ or brain orgasm.

I remember in my younger years being forced to pray, then why I asked ‘why?’ I got into trouble for simply questioning a God.
Firstly, let me congratulate you for seeing the truth. I have heard the transition from theist to atheist likened to coming off Class A drugs. It is like a dark cloud from the horizon has cleared and you can live how you wish without any superstitious fear of ‘hell’ or likewise out to get you. Clearly this works for you and I wish you happiness is continuing your new lifestyle.

Yep, I’ll have to go with Dreamstuff Entity: intellectual awakening.
Spiritual just sounds too, well, religious 🙂

I can relate sort of. I wouldn’t call it a spiritual awakening though. More like a realization of how things here can work and come into play by simply just making decisions for yourself.

The Whoflew Bird

It sounds like you’ve had quite the experience : )
It is not full enlightenment, but it is what is commonly refered to in Zen circles as a kensho experience. Enlightenment is something else, but it doesn’t really matter. If you are happy I assume you want to keep what you’ve got. Correct? Best to you.

I wouldn’t call it spiritual, obviously, but it can be uplifting.
“When I became convinced that the Universe is natural–that all the ghosts and gods are myths, there entered into my brain, into my soul, into every drop of my blood, the sense, the feeling, the joy of freedom. The walls of my prison crumbled and fell, the dungeon was flooded with light, and all the bolts, and bars, and manacles became dust. I was no longer a servant, a serf, or a slave. There was for me no master in all the wide world–not even in infinite space. I was free–free to think, to express my thoughts–free to live to my own ideal–free to live for myself and those I loved–free to use all my faculties, all my senses–free to spread imagination’s wings–free to investigate, to guess and dream and hope–free to judge and determine for myself–free to reject all ignorant and cruel creeds, all the “inspired” books that savages have produced, and all the barbarous legends of the past–free from popes and priests–free from all the “called” and “set apart”–free from sanctified mistakes and holy lies–free from the fear of eternal pain–free from the winged monsters of the night–free from devils, ghosts, and gods. For the first time I was free. There were no prohibited places in all the realms of thought–no air, no space, where fancy could not spread her painted wings–no chains for my limbs–no lashes for my back–no fires for my flesh–no master’s frown or threat–no following another’s steps- -no need to bow, or cringe, or crawl, or utter lying words. I was free. I stood erect and fearlessly, joyously, faced all worlds.” -Robert Green Ingersoll
