Aren’t grimoires dangerous?

I had a look at one and it spelt a warning that as I read it demons were watching me and I quote “…You ought to be very careful…..’

I just shut down the site it was on….after seeing that in the preface.Seriously isn’t using Grimoires and Solomonic magic dangerous? If a grimoire writer/practitioner can warn a reader…. then how much more dangerous is the stuff in practice?

Ps I’m christian but this is a question for all…are they or aren’t they???

From my study I have found two types of Grimoire, one (like mentioned mostly in other answers) is a journal or diary, the other is a collection of instructions on spell work and alchemy/herbalist formulas. When a warning is given in a work, I generally believe that to be a caution against attempting any spell work or infusion that I do not have guidance (a practitioner) at hand to assist if I have trouble. Any and all spell work that you have not practiced with skilled people can harm you. It also is quite obvious that any alchemical or herbal… Read more »

Not necessarily. As Epona mentioned, technically, a grimoire is a notebook or diary. They are not necessarily evil. Even the infamous Ars Goetia–which, as Epona mentioned, gives instructions on summoning demons–assumes that its reader and poetntial conjurer is a Christian. To elaborate, it gives instructions on how to summon demons to do one’s bidding using the names of God. In other words, you aren’t asking the demon for favors, you’re forcing to do what you want through invoking God. I really wouldn’t fool around with it anymore than I’d mix up chemicals in my basement, but the fact is, it’s… Read more »

Different people have different beliefs; depends on your point of view I guess. People oriented towards Judeo/Christian belief systems in ceremonial magic seem to worry most about things like demons. Pagan Witches generally don’t even mention demons, don’t worry about them because they don’t believe in them (or at least don’t believe they are prevalent and after us– just pockets of negativity). Incidentally, they seem to have far fewer, if any, problems and reports about such nasties bothering them. For them, grimiors are more like recipe books for herbal incenses and brews, as their magic is more about utilizing the… Read more »

Epona is right. A Grimoire is nothing more than a diary or notebook. Depending on the works of the person who wrote in it can be interpreted differently for each person reading it. Similar to your Christian bible. Some Grimoires can be dangerous depending on how you use the information within or how you interpret it. Personal gain is always dangerous when it comes to spells and such. There are many Grimoires out there are more like a book someone wrote notes on what they have studied and how it was interpreted. Some are diaries of their daily lives and… Read more »

A grimoire is just a book. Last time I checked, books were safe, unless someone throws it at you. Then that might hurt.

Grimoire is a fancy name for a diary or journal. Not ALL Grimoires are evil, scarey, or dangerous. Whether a Grimoire, or spiritual journal, is dangerous or not depends entirely on who wrote it, and what they put in it. Mine, which I prefer the term Book of Shadows, is harmless. It has a bunch of what I have learned in it, some rituals, rites, and spellwork. But nothing harmful or dangerous. An example of a dangerous Grimoire would be the Goetia, also known as the Lesser Keys of Solomon the King, as you touched on in your question. The… Read more »
