Parkers Astrology is a pretty good basic one for learning the basic building blocks. Also Jeff Mayo ‘Teach Yourself Astrology’.

Stella, you have given a great answer and I agree with most of what you say, but the word ‘horoscope’ actually traditionally means the ascendant in the birth chart. I think you are using the term horoscope to mean the sun sign columns. This is an extremely common confusion so I just wanted to mention it to clear it up! Hope you don’t mind.

For the beginner, I’d recommend Steven Forrest’s “Inner Sky,” Kelly Phipps’ “Celestial Renaissance” and “The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need” (misleading title, but a good beginner intro). 🙂 As for the other comments… For those who have not explored the subject, horoscopes are not all there is to astrology. Horoscopes only deal with a tiny part, the Sun, because that fits best in a small space and is easiest to look up. There are no good books on learning astrology. There are, however, some good books debunking astrology.

Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs is considered a classic popular book on the subject. It can get pretty complicated with sidereal, natal, and different ephemera.

It’s simple.
Take a statement and generalize it to such an extreme that any person could interpret it as applying to him/her.
Then, assign a group of stars to it.

I wouldn’t get into Astrology if I were you.
I’m an agnostic-atheist, and when you get into things like Astrology and Horoscopes, the line into the occult gets a little blurry.
And that stuff is real. Just don’t do it.
