Anyone else experience Sleep Paralysis or Old Hag attacks?

For me it started in 1995. It’s an odd feeling. Your entire body is paralyzed & feels the way your foot does when it falls asleep. You can’t move. I can’t even move my jaw to speak. I feel like someone or something “dark” is watching me, right next to me. It is talking to me in an inaudible voice. The only way I can get “it” to leave is if I recite a Hail, Mary or an Our Father. It is terrifying. It happens sporadically, but when it does, sometimes it’ll happen a few times during the night. So, when I have the experience, I’ll often stay awake because I’m too afraid to go to sleep. Please tell me others experience this. I want it to stop. “It” seems to follow me wherever we move.
Extra detail– It’s not a psychological thing. I study psychological anthropology, so I know a thing or two about it. It feels like a spiritual thing.

Sleep paralysis.

SP is very common, especially in the teen years and 20s. Auditory and visual hallucinations are part of the experience because your mind is waking up before your body. Almost everyone senses a presence, or hears a voice, and I have too a couple times, but mostly I just feel and hear loud buzzing in the back of my neck, like someone turned a razor on back there. Hallucinations can be VERY real, so it’s possible that it’s all just part of the experience of your mind waking up before your body does. Just know that God is everywhere present, and think about this, or say your prayer, or anything else that comforts you right before bed.

All human beings suffer from some form of sleep paralysis… With or without the old hag attacks…………

I did when I was younger. I could feel my whole body being pressed down on the bed, and I couldn’t even move, no matter how hard I fought back.
They explained that it was all some sort of half dream/half awake thing, that I was imagining feeling the bed move and hearing the springs creak as I was being pushed down.
What they never could explain was why it started when we moved into that house, and it stopped once we moved out. There was also some other weird stuff that happened there, stuff getting moved, pictures falling off the bookshelves when nobody is home but me.

Thats scary. But Im sure its just medical/psychological

And you are?

Oh yeah! Been there done that. But mine were a drug induced side effect. From an overdose of psuedoephidrine 60 mg. Yes and you get an electric jolt going through you at the climax of your dream.

Yeah – happened to me once! Bloody terrifying as you feel so helpless and violated. You do need to remind yourself it is not true but a brain trick. Mine was triggered by the demonic noise of a male possum on my roof (Aussies will no the noise I mean). I feel sorry for you have had it happen often. I suggest taking up an exercise like weight training. Martial arts, Tai Chi or yoga that will help you have a better sleep pattern and break the cycle.

that happens 2 me all the time xcept i only had the halusenations once and i was in alien space ship it was weird cuz my eyes were open and i couldnt see anything but i heard weird noises and just somehow knew i was on a alien spaceship and i know it wasnt a dream cuz i was thinking 2 myself that it was a dream asnd you wake up if you realize your dreaming. then i fell back asleep and woke up the next morning . i think it was a halasenation cuz thats wat everyone says but some stuff in my room was different when i woke up like a crooked picture frame and the tv on a different channel etc.

Sounds like sleep paralysis with the hypnagogic images that often accompany it-strange flashes of colors or images or sounds-The reason the “hail mary” business works is the process of redirecting your thoughts by tapping into the portion of the brain that controls memorization….and if it were spiritual…wouldn’t the Hag or whatever have to be catholic for that to work anyway?

Yes, I have felt this; it is rather common.
The following is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis
Sleep paralysis is a common condition characterized by transient partial or total paralysis of skeletal muscles and areflexia that occurs upon awakening from sleep or less often while falling asleep. Stimuli such as touch or sound may terminate the episode, which usually has a duration of seconds to minutes
Physiologically, it is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully conscious, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations … and an acute sense of danger. Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual due to the vividness of such hallucinations
If this is a recurrent problem for you, there are treatments:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis#Treatment
Yes, it may feel like a spiritual thing (and people in past centuries interpreted it as such) but as you can see from the above notes, it is not … well, it’s exactly a psychological thing so much as it is physiological.
