This looks like a valid and fairly accurate explanation.

Keep in mind that we Pagans don't like to be defined too rigidly -- why is that? ;-)

I would just like to add that Wicca is one of many Neopagan paths, all of which are worth investigating.

Good post!

wicca is an old religion beyond popular belief. It only has been a few decades since it has been recognized in the world as a legit religion. You need to take it back thousands of years. Pagans, wiccans, and witchcraft has been practiced throughout time but never really had a name. If you stop and think many different type of people all over the world have similar beliefs of that of the god and goddess. For instance the aztec, mayans, incas, druids the old religion of italy, and the most obvious is the native americans with their great spirits and their spirit totems. This religion has been around just changed by the people who practice it. Just like any religion it is what comes from inside the individual who practices it. There really is no right or wrong answer it is all in the eye of the beholder whom is preforming the rituals. And that is what is the most imoportant thing to keep in mind when having anything to do with religion. The man you mentioned may have brought in the light again but i guarentee that people were still practicing the old religion. That man just gave it a name that's all. And yes we are all intertwined together but that holds true with all things living.Even those of other religions.Because religious beliefs all started from somewhere. From one universal idea that there is a great creator.

Its ok for a Gardnerian, but too specific for general Wicca. Mention that you are describing Gardnerian Wicca, and then it will be accurate.
Blessed Be,

Gardnerian Wicca and it's off-spring traditions are aptly described by the author, but Wicca is a much broader religion with much deeper roots. The first thing one must understand is that if you put 20 Wiccans in a room, they will produce at least 21 different viewpoints on what Wicca is. This is because the religion of Wicca is a religion of freewill, not a religion of dogma. The Wiccan Rede clearly expresses this sentiment with the words, " ... and it harm none, do what ye will." So each Wiccan has the ability to interpret and practice their religion as they see fit, within the general limitations of the elders of their tradition or other governing (and I use this term loosely) bodies.

As a Third Degree Gardnerian for over ten years, I have learned that virtually everything that Gerald Gardner and Doreen Valente used for the development of the craft, took their roots from other traditions and practices. Gerald himself, claimed that much of his craft was taken from his teachings from the Old Forest Coven, but it is clear that Gerald added much, much more, in essence, creating a new path for the Wiccan faith.

What is distinctive about Gardnerian Wicca is the way in which the many component parts were blended to establish a much stronger structure. Just like steel, concrete, and glass are combined to make a single building stronger and more useful than any of the components by themselves, Gardnerian Wicca is more than the sum of it's parts. This is why many people having a basis in other religions find it difficult to understand at first.

Today, much of what is defined as Wicca, can be found at Barnes and Nobels. In many of the books, authors expound upon their own personal interpretations of the craft, spirituality, and the nature of the universe. To say that what they observe is not Wicca, because it doesn't fit into what others have defined as their limitations, may be inaccurate. Instead of reading the critiques of credentialed authors or pundits, and using this as your basis for "truth" as to "what is" and "what is not" Wicca, I would advise you that the best source of "truth" can be found within yourself. Search your heart and seek out "truth" therein. That IMHO is the Wiccan way.

Although this was very long, basically it is my belief that it is fairly accurate. But Wicca is a religion where we all have our own personal beliefs, so not everyone is sure to agree with you or me for that matter.

If this is an essay you have done a wonderful job of it!

To Spiralstair313, What makes you say Gardner didn't invent Wicca?

To answer the question, most of the information, though somewhat generalized is true.

In response to spiralstair313...

Not all Wiccans agree with the 13 Principles, and here's why:

http://wicca.timerift.net/laws/13principals2.shtml

Also, if you read "The Triumph of the Moon", by Ronald Hutton, I think you'll find a LOT of very good evidence that Wicca is no older than the 20th century.

And so I am actually answering the question... not all Wiccans follow "The Rede of the Wiccae" in its entirety. ;-)

Why all the cutting and pasting? Are you asking, or telling?

Or might this be for your own website?

If you have SPECIFIC questions about wicca or Witchcraft, ask this chick
