Shamanism is one of those things where it is better to learn by doing.
It’s much more rewarding for you than if i simply sat down and taught you everything i know.

It’s an “ism”
My experience with it is very limited. All that I know is that it seems to be very earth based. It is separate from Wicca. There seems to be an oldness associated with it, which gives it some sort of authority. Anything that I’ve read about it, or have seen associated with it seems to reflect an idea of a “medicine man” and how native pagan individuals interacted with their environment.
Actual “shamanism” originated with indigenous peoples of Siberia. The term has been appropriated my many scam artists and poseurs to make themselves sound mystical and powerful. Generally if I see someone calling themselves a “shaman” I am instantly dubious. Unless they are from Siberia.

“Shamanism” is really kinda more of a cultural anthropologic term rather than a settled religion. It is a range of religious practices found in societies throughout the world, that involves communicating with and appeasing spirits in order to achieve a favorable outcome for the petitioners, often involving specific rituals and trances. As mentioned, it is found in Siberia, but also in Africa, Southeast Asia, Native American rites, and Korea.
In the neo pagan world it is an approach of which I am not fond. Shamans take a very individual approach to the divine or “unseen.” They study hard and typically undergo ordeals that supposedly qualify them to lead others spiritually.
In my experience they often have control issues when it comes to doing group work or ritual. I believe this is because the kind of personality that is attracted to the shamanic approach has a specific set of weaknesses that the training through ordeal and leadership emphasizes.
I prefer a more egalitarian approach and an emphasis on group work where individuals work in harmony rather than a leader-follower model.
