I think as a society we are becoming more aware of spiritual and paranormal things. Look at all the ghost shows on TV (Ghost Hunter, Paranormal State, etc.) that shows that people are at least willing to entertain the thought that this can be real.
Also, there are more people involved in yoga & meditation.
