Carl Schoonover: How to look inside the brain

There have been remarkable advances in understanding the brain, but how do you actually study the neurons inside it? Using gorgeous imagery, neuroscientist and TED Fellow Carl Schoonover shows the tools that let us see inside our brains.

  • I take to fact that this video is most watched by athiests and none the other… just to say to someone more clear-er proof and try to push them away form the truth. The fact is, let people go on with what they believe in… and don’t use other factors to pull them from what they want to Believe in. I mean my comment got a thumbs down do to Dis-believers and my provoking child-hood explanation. Infact, no matter what.. I will always believe I’ m going to some-where nice before I die.

  • There is no rational argument to show that God does not exist. Just like there is no rational argument to prove there are no leprechauns. I’m not saying there is no God. I’m just saying there is insufficient evidence to conclude that there is. Evidence that we shouldn’t accept that God does exist? The Bible could have been written by people and contains no information they could not have produced. Natural forces are still somewhat mysterious, but the evidence does not require a conscious being.

  • In summary, the arguments in favour of God either make claims that aren’t true (most of the Bible, Qu’ran etc) or argue that, because we don’t know the answer to a question, the answer must be God. For example, how did the universe start? We aren’t really sure. Big bang theory is part of it, but it doesn’t mean there is or isn’t a God. And then there’s the biblical accounts that are just farcical. I’m not saying there is NO God. I’m just saying there is no reason to believe there is a God.

  • Well, if you say theres no god then obviously you don’t believe in him Also what you are saying is that, people think god a a socialized Exploited thoery witch mean’s most of the science is wrong on your part saying people shouldn’t believe in the big-bang if it’s just a thoery and not concluded Infact they have a “thoery” it’s a conclusion not the full on tag. In other random sayings a summary with so much evidence would be so difficult to understand.

  • Well, did you know people read the bible in differen’t ways… and the bible can be manipulated to mean differen’t things so you could be reading it the wrong way, Infact going to church insures up-most understanding-because, there is a priest. Or a pastor and such to help you understand it clearly as possible.

  • Yes, that is true. And thank goodness for that. However, I find it difficult to believe that, if there is a God, that he/she would have anything to do with a book that accepts rape (Deuteronomy 22:20-27) or claims stoning is an adequate punishment for homsexuality (Leviticus 20:13) . I know these passages are sideshows to the real message, but the fact that those passages exist at all is disturbing. I understand it can lead to a peaceful world view, but I don’t think it is necessary.

  • To continue from my last point, I think that humans, as a social species, have an inherent capability of moral conduct, although in some circumstances, this falls apart. So, while many Christians are great people, I don’t associate this with their religious views as much as I feel that they are actually good people and I give them credit in that regard.

  • pay attention to what he’s saying at 4:45. it’s almost like he’s referring to God or something

  • I’m sure he is – and I would like to add, it doesn’t matter what his personal beliefs are, he shouldn’t have mentioned it in this context. It’s very unprofessional for a scientist and shows a green light to those who have recently become detrimental to the aims and integrity of the scientific world.

  • People don’t see ‘black’ when they’re dead – like they don’t see black before they were born (do you remember seeing black before you were born?). People don’t know that they’re dead, nor that they haven’t been born yet – it’s a non-experience. You know what it’s like to be alive, but you can’t know what its like to be in a dreamless sleep nor deeply anaesthetised (you don’t see black because you don’t see or remember anything) – so it follows that you can’t ever know what it’s like to be dead.

  • Well in consideration my friend had a Seazure.. So the doctor told him that he was dead for a moment, and infact he said he saw black.. So I have prof to support my opinion.

  • Well, you have to remember that if you don’t understand the right reason for the nile then you shouldn’t be using it againsty someone in a argument if you don’t know that much about it.. Yes you probably read the book reading the old testiment or the new one? Because, those names do not ring the bell. Or I havn’t gotten that far yet.

  • Well, you are reading it wrong it’s showing a example of how raged someone would be if such happend… not personal Physical intachment but the thoughts and pain you feel towards that person. Again marriage Violations.. also some people understand things diff ways so the only way the bible can give information to multiple people is to explain things in thee view, wich you probably don’t understand it but someone else would better. Sorry for my grammar 😛

  • Deuteronomy and Leviticus are part of the old testament. My question is rather simple. Do you think the Bible is a book authored by God? Is God a benevolent, omnipotent being? If this is the case, how do you explain those passages? I provided the quotes so all you need to do is open your Bible to those verses. Explain them to me and then explain how this is the work of a God who has boundless love for the human race.

  • If he saw black, he was, to some extent, conscious when he saw it. I’ve known people see all sorts of things during brain episodes. Your friend wasn’t ‘brain dead’ because his brain would be too damaged to ever recover; when doctors say things like this, they mean cardiac and respiratory arrest, and only say it when speaking to non-professionals. You don’t recover from a dead brain.

  • ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! Not more “God is real”….. reply “nuh uh, No he isn’t” is bs why do people start these battles on videos that should spawn thoughtful discussion on the ideas that are presented in these videos or any other videos… just let it goooooooooooo!
